The Labour Party

I can't, fairly, pop this on the Keef Starmer Fred and as much as Sanders bothers me when he's back in the States, here he's free to be Bernie Sanders.

A lot of the nonsense the Labour guy speaks is what people speak on here.

Enjoy...

I fear that the Labour Party will fully turn into a center right party like Dems in the US….

I have said this since the ousting of Corbyn.

I was once asked why do I follow US politics over UK politics.

My answer? To know where UK politics come from today.

Both Labour and Dems are neolib in outset, so they ARE political derivatives of each other.

In my opinion, of course.

In my opinion you are spot on. When I hear stuff from Biden and Pelosi we need a “strong GOP” shows where their ideology lies. It’s the reason the Dems hate Bernie so much because he exposes most of them as being GOP-lite. The Dems main political shtick is that they aren’t the Republicans while offering no significant alternative outside of more neo-lib policies. I still remember not long ago Obama considered “reforms” to SS/Medicare in order to to seem bipartisan.

Probably my mindset but Im quiet optimistic the party will move more to the left one they are in power.

For me its the game they have to play to be electable. Personally I am fed up of a Labour party with lofty ideals, but unelectable leaving the country in the clutches of the Tory’s. If that means a bit of compromise I’m prepared to accept it for the greater good.

Labour lite is better than no Labour at all.

Well Frank, I fell into that trap with Blair. Especially when he had a majority as big as our goal difference in the 17-18 season. I thought he would use that to make radical changes. Well he did for about 400,000 dead Iraqis and the rest.
What I fear is, for example judging by the new Protocol agreement and the "don't look back in anger" rhetoric - that the Tories will scrape in again. Starmer is then destroyed and its only for the 28 election will some radical policies with popular support come in and as the Tories privatise the NHS, Labour get in as usually happens when the country is absolutely on its knees

I don’t think they will get in this time but only if Starmer does not give the Torys and most importantly the media the ammunition to discredit him in front of middle england and a very conservative, risk averse electorate.

Its a bit like with all the strikes. It may fit well with the Left of the party heading out onto the picket line, but political suicide once the elections come round. The likes of Corbyn were sitting ducks for the press pack once the election came round. This was obvious too many, and the consequences have been horrible.

Imo as a country, using a broad stereotype, were a mix of contradictions. Majority are right wing in relation to the likes of Immigration and law and order but sympathetic to assisting those less well off and paying tax to support the likes of the health service. For me Labour need to tread carefully to navigate this minefield and sadly, or positively dependent upon your view, thats reflected in how Starmer has to come across.

Its probably true Labour wont be as radical, if elected, as probably many of us would like, but I think its more a reflection on where the country stands politically.

Agree with some of what you say. However, there is also the question of principle- the Labour Party was formed to be the political voice of the workers
Things are so bad now that the space is there for socialist policies. Yes, they will be destroyed by the media etc so the only way is through grassroots activism and mobilising people, Corbyn did that but was destroyed by the media and actually also by his own party.
Unfortunately, Starmer has nothing for people to get behind
