The 'M' Word

My son jacked a job in earlier this year after repeatedly being called “a fuckin idiot” by the boss. This amongst other nice names like “stupid ****” and “fuckin idiot”.

The boss was in his 50s.

I actually contacted his mrs, who does his admin, to explain its really not ok. She at first put it down to “banter”, a word i despise but she then did admit that he does go too far sometimes.
I left it at “maybe your monumental turn over of staff has something to do with the way he speaks to his staff and life would be a lot easier if they created a happier work place”

Sounds like a right charmer! He's definitely old enough to know the oigins of the word. I wonder if the 'banter' extended to his staff speaking to him in the same way? My guess would be not. Always a mystery to me why you'd go to the trouble of hiring and paying people but then treat them like crap.

Well done for calling it out though. You never know, maybe his Mrs will try and get him to tone it down.

Never used it personally, the big Irish family I grew up with, the Dad never had a problem with us swearing as nippers (between ourselves that is wouldn’t let us swear at adults) so obviously we made the most of it, but the one word that was totally out of bounds (and he made sure we knew it) was the ‘M’ word, it’s always stuck with me that, it’s a shitty word anyway.

I have seen it on here a few times and have called out a couple of people using it , it is grossly offensive

I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and it wouldn't surprise me if some, especially some of our younger posters, just didn't have the context to realise how offensive it is. Once it's been pointed out, you'd like to think that decent people would cut it out.

I like banter but your sons boss is just a **** and his wife is excusing his rude boorish behaviour as banter when it isn't.

Words do change their meaning or become unacceptable over time. Which is a very good thing.
When I was a kid, people with Downs Syndrome were commonly described as “mongols”. I knew a lad when growing up in Gorton who gloried in the name of “Johnny idiot”. We still had the Spastics Society charity and the local school for kids with special needs was known as by all as “Belle Vue Backward”.
Guy Gibson’s dog had not yet been renamed, and many such-named dogs roamed the Gorton streets to be loudly called in, by name, at tea time. Can’t imagine that happening these days - and back then, most dogs were kicked-out during the day. I tell my kids and grandchildren these things and they either refuse to believe it or piss themselves laughing!

(Sorry just noticed this is an old thread !)

As someone who works for a charity who look after disabled adults primarily , their name could be considered by some to be ironic. They continue with the name as it continues to generate donations and generally good publicity

Never used it mainly because I am aware of it's meaning and the offence it causes.

But...

It's just a word. The short version of a longer word. A word that was used in general parlance by medical professionals for decades. A word that has also been in a song.

If people want to use it, and show up their ignorance in the process, then let them make a fool out of themselves.

No need to ban it...better off educating the idiots who think it's OK to use it.

Not sure if the same song but I remember an Ian Dury song using a similar term.
