The MEN Pink

it used to blow my mind that i could get a newspaper with all the write ups in it not long after i got home from the game. felt very strange!!
Ditto. Pick up the Pink on the way home from our game and I'd be checking for the Stalybridge Celtic score.
Se they'd 'won' 1-0 and complete my day!
Until the dreaded 'late goals' column on the back page and see actually they'd conceded 2 in injury time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My brother got a Satdi job in Middleton selling the Pink in pubs and clubs
He says that there would be an act on stage in full swing when he walked in the place and shouted 'Pink'there would be a mass exodus to the doors and blokes would sit in front of the stage with full size papers opened while the act continued.

Tough crowd these Mancs, bet Coldplay or Harry Stylesnever had such challenges

Yet some national newspapers didn’t even have the scores from the previous night’s midweek games in them.

I was in the spurs end for that, undercover, standing behind the goal. We lost. Might have been 3-1.
It was a day and a half that.
Howard Kendall as manager all football fans buzzing after WC ..sun shining ,
1st day of the season excitement
Paul Lake at centre back and captain of City..spurs score 1st, we equalise cue mass celebration on the away terrace ...then ,as seemed to happen so regularly back then City crumbled ..Gazza took over
Peter Reid wilted in the heat and we lost 3-1.

Was Peter Gardner City's main match reporter, we need another one like him now
Yes he was. Always had a pipe(not crack) in his gob. A very nice man as I recall. They all were, David Meeke(Utd reporter) was very polite and softly spoken whilst Paul Ince was the gobby one who you could have a joke with. I was a messenger/runner when I left school and ended up in the Sports Dept for the first few months. Proper journalists, nit like the click bait rats of today who just copy n paste stories from twitter etc.

I was a messenger in 1978
Hated the way the reporters would shout “Boy” at you to collect the copy from them
Luckily I was only there about a month, then got a job in the press room

I have an image ( maybe an imagined one ) of him always having a big fuck off cigar in his gob whenever I’d bump into him on away trips.

The Pink ranks alongside moving down the Kippax so you could see the half time scores being put up score by score at the North stand and trying to locate a Radio rentals store at 4.45 to watch the teleprinter through the window with half a dozen others.

Think he actually supported Blackpool but you wouldn't have known. Likeable chap who I met on pre-season tour in Marbella and Huelva etc in 86 and he offered us a lift back from Watford youth cup final loss when David James was in goal for the hornets.

Used to stand at Ken's newsagent or wherever, and take it back to Dad's or Grandads. We'd split it in 3 and exchange the parts. I always felt hard done by, when I got the central part. It never seemed to have much City.

I always hated how it moved to Sunday and died a death.

These days it's hard to get full coverage of all local league and non-league teams in one place.
