The MEN Pink

Over on ITV, the late scores ticking across the bottom of the wrestling. Following the football at the same time as Big Daddy v Giant Haystacks at Dudley Town Hall was something you probably couldn’t get kids to believe you about nowadays

One of my mates at primary school was adamant his dad was the cock of Manchester and had leathered those pair one night in the Lord Lyon.

Billy Meredith lived near our newsagent, used to chat with the 8 or 9 of us staring down Burton rd waiting for the van. Often the driver just slowed and chucked the roll of pinks onto the pavement, whoever grabbed it took it into the shop followed by the rest, most had already paid so the "crush" was soon over. Round about 9oc a bloke on a bike would ride up and down flogging the Empire, with all the scores and horse-racing results.
I Am amazed you used to chat with Billy Meredith, now he was a proper legend, I know he played for both City & United but I have heard he prefered City, did he ever mention anything interesting?

Circa 1984. Sent out to get me a Football Pink, 4 cans of Mickelson, 10 menthol fans for your mam and a Frys peppermint cream for yourself. Don't go to Len's papershop though, its shut now. Go to the one on Partington Street.
Great days.
Now know it was my old man's quick time to knock one into my mam while I was out.
Fast forward 10 years and we were both knocking one into a pair of female traffic wardens from Salford while on the pass in Benidorm.
Happy days indeed.

I was working in the press room at the MEN from ‘78
We would start printing the pink about 11:00am, between 10-15 thousand copies to be despatched to the van
At the side of front page, there was a full column left blank. The van had a mini letterpress machine that they ran the scores through on something called a fudge
The actual pink final, was printed with the match reports at Deansgate press room
Presses would start rolling about 5:15 and if the 7 machines had a good run, usually complete the run about 6:00
Clean the rollers and blankets, have a wash then head next door to the Vic on the piss!!
Ahh, the good old days

In addition to the "pink" which was a Manchester Evening News publication, there was also a "green" which was an Manchester Evening Chronicle publication. Pretty sure the "chron" was a Thompsom paper printed at what is now the "Printworks"
Bolton had the 'Buff' About 5 copies were delivered our local shop on Saturday Evenings along with the Pink. Kings newsagents Pendlebury.

I think it was the other way around.
The MEN was green and the Chronicle was Pink.
When the MEN bought / merged the two, they chose to have it the Pink as it was the more successful
It was certainly the way you describe but until.now l never knew why they changed the names or colours.

I thought that the Green was better although back in the day I would buy both. By the time I started watching City the Green had gone (or rather turned Pink).

My first season watching City was 1962-63. I went to the home matches against Spurs (won1-0) and United (late equaliser for the Rags 1-1).

The following week City were away to West Ham and I decided to go to a motorcycle race at Oulton Park. It was great to start with until the rain came down. I trudged away to catch a train from the now closed Tarporley Station and bought a Pink.

The headlines were all about United winning and staying up with City losing heavily to West Ham (and relegated) almost invisible on the front page.

Then to make a bad weekend even worse, I read in the papers the next day that one of my all-time heroes, Bob McIntyre, had been killed in the meeting at Oulton. McIntyre was the first rider to lap the Isle of Man mountain circuit at over 100mph.
Didn't City get beaten 6-1 with Bert got sent off.for hurling the ball at the ref?

Used to love the football special theme tune played in midweek back in the 80's, radio 2 I think. The great Peter Jones"15 minutes gone in tonight's league cup game at Maine Road between Manchester City and Nottingham Forest, and there's already been a goal" . God we were shit but I still loved everything about it
Yes I remember that night 87 was working down in Bude, was getting ready to go out for a few drinks had the ceefax latest scores on and after 2 minutes it come up City 1 up Varadi.Few weeks later it was the 10-1.
