The MH transfer record- Are you 'Proud'?

All of the top managers have made poor signings.

Hughes was under pressure to replace most of the team in a very short period of time. He had to sign players that were available and that were willing to join us. Perhaps if he had more time to build his team gradually he might not have bought some of the players he did? For example, when he signed Bridge we desparately needed a left back. Who else was available?

The RSC signing was his biggest failure because of his known injury problems. But there again, Bellamy was just as much a gamble because of his injury and disciplinary issues and he turned out to be an excellent signing.

did no one else catch the end of his interview where he said he'd rather have bobby zamora than dzeko? crazy talk there

.

Cissoko , Coentrao , Bastos , Kolarov are the first names that come to mind. but they werent "PL proven"..........

The simple fact is that the majority of players have improved under Mancini, whether bought by Hughes or not.
It's only 12 months ago that people were saying that Zab was a "good squad player," but now I think we'd all have him in the starting 11.
Richards has improved ten fold and Kompany is the best centre back in the prem. De Jong is as important as Tevez and Silva.
Tevez (whether bought by Hughes or not) hardly scored in his early months here and it's a well known fact that Hughes didnt want AJ.

i think we are being a little harsh here, we know Jo was a frank purchase, we also know rsc eclipses steve daley as our worst ever buy but most if not all of the others were understandable.
hughes was starting from scratch, the project was in its infancy so we could'nt attract the very top players straight away, we had to just buy better that what we had, of course clubs knew we were wadded and stung us on price, not the managers fault.one we'd got things moving the likes of ade were added albeit again at inflated prices and stupid wages, had we not done so we would'nt have been high enough to get mancini, silva and co to the club.
if bob gets us 4th or better we then move up another level again, bigger players will want to come, only we'll have more leverage which should curb wage demands, vital for the ffp shit.
its a project, it was back then and it still is today.
Nail on head. Although he wasn't liked much, Hughes got us where we needed to be for RM to come in and tweak it. The spine of today's team consists of players he has brought in (barring Hart). Komps and NDJ are two players that you could build any team around. I'll thank MH for bringing them here.

I do now think that he probably couldn't have taken us to the very top, but he wasn't appointed by the owners and he did a pretty good job all in all. Good Europa run, good CC run but never consistently challengng, as we are now, for top 4, but in the time he had that wasn't going to be easy. He was heading down the right road though.

His transfer record was the thing I was least dissatisfied with when he was here but several things strike me about his transfer policy:

1. He bought two of his best buys, in Kompany and Zaba, who weren't established in the Premier League before we got 'the money'.
2. Hughes policy of buying so-called 'proven' Premier League players was the source of his most abysmal buys in Bridge, Crocky and Lescott, especially as they were absurdly overvalued being 'proven' (definition: irony). Bellamy, yeah, played well for us but could only play every other game and his attitude meant we eventually had to ship him out, again. Not a bad buy but cannot be called a great one. By contrast, his other great buy was again, not Premier League proven; De Jong.
3. Hughes' best buys are playing more and improving faster under Mancini, and in the case of Kompany being played where he is more effective and I couldn't give two fucks if he's happier in defensive midfield.

I much prefer Mancini's policy of buying young and buying players who aren't yet established in the Premier League. It will serve us much better in terms of building a side with longevity and/or selling on in the transfer market.

no, sorry.

some good signings but he utterly failed with some of his purchases even in a long term sense, only a couple will be around for the next few years. He also completely failed to build a squad with good cover, flexibility and solidity.

Questionable man management skills of current staff at the time added to his complete disdain for anything bought before him or not playing on these shores (bar the odd exception) showed him up badly.

What a cheeky bastard!! It's all very well signing 3/4 quality players when you've spent up to £200m but he had not a clue how to get the best out of De Jong,Kompany or Zabaleta and Tevez was pretty garbage under him too.

It is funny how his under £10m signings worked quite well but his big buys were pretty abysmal in the grand scheme of things (De Jong except).

If he was as good at managing as he is at spouting off to the press then we'd have had a cracking manager.

In retrospect, it seems one of the worst managerial decisions at City in a long time to buy Kompany and not play him at CB.

Kompany is good enough to play in midfield, but he's bloody spectacular at CB

Kompany's preferred position is CM if you remember

Wow, some people on here talk a lot of nonsense
Yeah and your one of them!! Just because he prefers playing somewhere doesn't mean they should play there.

Vinny = above average Dcm but a top draw centre back!!
