The Michael Oliver Penalty Thread

Why can't it be both? It was shit defending to let the attacker get in front of them but it wasn't the defenders actions that caused the attacker to go over, the attacking players made the decision themselves to go down which is cheating.
If the criteria now for giving a penalty is any kind of slight contact on an attacker who then decides to go over, if you combine that with the handball fiasco that will mean over 70% of goals scored this season will be penalties.
If this style of refereeing continues then the top three at the end of this season will be Liverpool, United and Leicester as they are the best at instigating contact with opposition players and throwing themselves to the ground. This bullshit fascination with 'there's contact so he's entitled to go over' is a joke, a player is never 'entitled' to go over, he either gets taken out by an opposition player or it's a dive.
For decades we laughed at European and South American teams play acting, cheating and diving all over the place but its now infected our game.
There was a penalty on Sat when a defender grasped a forward's left shoulder as they both sprinted for the goal line. Penalty said the experts. You cant grab a player like that. Then yesterday pretty much the same thing happened and the view was there wasn't 'enough contact in that'
You do not need a load of contact at speed to push forward, hold back enough to lose balance. Even be pushed downwards a little. Why else does a player have his hand on someone's shoulders when running? its more of an 'arm in an unnatural position' than some of the handball decisions we see.

All 3 were were challenges that did not need, and should not have been made, its subjective, but i don't believe any would have led to a goal scoring opportunity, let alone a goal. You can rest assured, that had that been the case, OliVAR would have had his red card out quicker than you can say, " play on, no penalty, LiVARpool might score" or "definitely no penalty, i can't give City a penalty"

Equally, i have not the slightest doubt, that had they been the other way round, we would have been lucky to get one of them given.
There's no way 3 pens would have been given at Anfield or OT against the home team....not a cat in hell....

Pushing and pulling of players is widely practiced and some are more skilful at it than others. One of the areas where the game would be so much better when it becomes an instant offence.

On the penalty subject they seem to be always given when the forward feels a slight touch and goes immediately to ground however on corners and free kicks it's like all in wrestling in the box and hardly ever given...doesn't add up!

The skeptical side of me thinks that they are trying to make it a higher scoring game in order to attract more viewers from certain countries.

...oh come on, every time somebody puts a hand on my shoulder it causes both my legs to buckle whilst simultaneously jumping in the air #prayforlicclejimmymaddison.

Don't give the opportunity in the first place, both of them they were wrong-sided and went to pull back the opponent.

No it doesn't create the overreaction, but it doesn't change the infringement either. I get why players do it though as refs seemingly never give penalties if players stay on their feet. Part of getting the overreaction out of the game is to give them too.
