Seems we have a funny situation growing in the midfield, where we have an abundance of players on paper and a seeming lack of presence on the pitch.

Much of this is the Rodri shaped hole in the middle, that we are oddly ill-equipped to fill. No, we were never going to have another Rodri, but it seems Kovacic was never a 6 (this was well known) and it turned out Gundogan's fitness/speed had dropped off somewhat.

With Bobb coming back - and the slightly alarming amount of people who were pinning a turn around in fortunes on his return - it would seem we're getting a bit chocca with players;

KdB, Foden, Silva, Kovacic, Gundogan, Doku, Grealish, Rodri, Bobb, Savinho, Nunes, McAtee, O'Reilly.... That's 13 that fit into 5 places if Haaland plays . Other names could be Echeverri, Stones, Lewis and Gvardiol, but we will ignore those 4.

I feel Rodri, Savinho & Foden (23/24 Foden) are ideal first XI players. KdB will always be floating around the first XI.

Doku, Bobb, Grealish & Silva ; the first 2 could have big futures, the latter a quality players but have question marks on what they want themselves.

Kovacic is a limited player (in my eyes) but a good squad addition.

McAtee could be great? But i feel if his progress is not huge then he will only ever be bit-part, and may leave because of it.

I dont think Nunes or Gundogan will be here beyond the summer. Grealish, Silva & McAtee may or may not leave. KdB is obviously on his final season(s) now.

The ins and outs will be quite major in midfield in 2025. O'Reilly's chance is now, he has to show he is the man to lock up central mid - do we sign short term to cover a big injury again? sign another midfielder who knows he will be benched? will Bobb feature much at all this season beyond the odd sub appearance?

KdB, , Silva, Kovacic, Gundogan, and Nunes, will all be surplus to requirements in the not too distant future sadly , Finding a back uo for Rodri will not be easy as has been proven so far

We need to leave 2 midfielders in the middle & not allow them to attack.

I’d also suggest we stop playing kev & allowing him to lose it & not track back

Finally ask defence to drop back 5-10 yards & kill the space
Everytime pep makes a sub it’s like for like kova off gundo on and I just can’t understand why at that stage you play both and just sit I’d rather that than see gundo chasing shadows on his own…tonight it should of been Bernardo off and gundo on and try and at least compensate for the lack of pace of them!

It's aged and has no pace. Will cost £££££££s to fix.
But we don't seem to be in the market for that area.
Oh and Douglas Luiz doesn't fix it!

Unfortunately, it seems there is a reason a defensive midfielder was adjudged to be the best player in Europe - because he is that good.
Incidentally, Fernandinho before gim was also exceptional.

It's like Madrid losing peak Ronaldo and trying to replace him with moderately decent, ageing players with limited pace and not used to play in his attacking role.

Outlandish thought. Rodri does the job of two maybe 3 players.

Why don't we put grealish in there alongside kovacic. Grealish is composed and kovacic can do the leg work.

That's my thought and have been thinking grealish should play centrally for a while now, we bought him from villa doing that.

we wanted Bellingham than moved over to Rice. after that we almost got Paqueta. guess what none of them would have played the leftback, rightback, left winger, right winger role we used Nunes in who ended up our midfield signing that summer.

instead of that they would have made sure Kovacic is really just a rotational option what he was signed for. also would have added steel and legs to our midfield which wasnt added since then. brutal squad planning error.
in the meantime Bernardo burnt out, Rodri got injured big time, Gundo legs are gone etc.

What's happened to Echeverri AM and Maximo Perrone DM..

I thought they had been brought back from their loan deals.

We also have O'Reilly and Mcatee.

Surely it's time to try and integrate some of our youngsters.

Playing the old guard ain't working. Kev has no magic left. He can't even make 20 yard passes anymore. And his cormers are woeful.

Something HAS to change.

A massive summer window is the real fix, because KDB, Silva, Nunes, and Gundo are all not good enough on current evidence, and several more from your list are likely to move on as well.

But for the rest of the season?

----------- Kova ----- ???
Gvardiol -- Ake/Khusanov -- Dias/Stones -- Akanji
---------------------- Ortega

Tell the defense to start sitting deeper, stop marauding into the box, build some stability in the back, and Pep needs to stop tinkering unless players are just not fit enough.

The problem is I have no idea who slots in beside Kova. Pep doesn't seem to trust anyone there bar Gundo and Silva and both of them seem like their legs are gone.

Tough times ahead.
