Beating Real Madrid would still make us outsiders to progress in the champions league, beating Chelsea is a much more significant result IMO.

Having said that I expect we'll do our utmost to win tonight and Sunday. And given that it isn't a straight choice of win tonight or win Sunday (or vice versa) I'd very much prefer if we win both.

But for me, Chelsea is the more important match.

I just don't get how you can give the Chelsea match an much bigger sense of importance than the Madrid game whilst you still have a chance of qualifying for the KO rounds, and, at worse, a defeat to Chelsea leaves you, at worse, 2pts behind United and still ahead of Chelsea and still only in November.

I can't speak for everyone else but I'm just not as arsed about the champions league as the premier league. It doesn't even come close.

Beat Madrid and we're still favourites to miss out on the group stages, the win could count for nothing in the long run. We won the league on goal difference last season, every point we get is vital for me.

Fair points. However, there are a lot of kids and 'thick' people on here, who can't see beyond the last 5 minutes of their lives. Of course we all want to get a result tonight and let's see where that takes us. I do think though that for most fans retaining the title >>>>>>>>>>>> Champions League and I believe this is why these 'if you had to choose' questions are being put out.

We are not going to win the Champions League this year, even if we somehow get lucky with the 5% chance that we go through the group.

As a club retaining the league is by far and away the overriding priority. That's why you got those answers. Everyone would love to beat Real Madrid of course, but we are all totally aware after last season what fine margins there are between success and failure in the PL. And Chelsea is arguably a 6 pointer.

From my point of view, whilst I'll enjoy the game tonight, I don't hold out a hope in hell of qualifying from the Champ League group.

Spot on sjk.

I think the difficulty with this place is there are times it is overrun with WUMs and rags stirring the pot. You can spot the genuine Blues a mile off, as more often than not (and we're all entitled to fly off the handle every now and then) they are pretty level headed and constructive with their comments.

If we look at where we are in the grand scheme of things, apart from doing better in Europe, I wouldn't swap it for the world.

So far, the owners are turning out to be the best owners any club could possibly dream of. We've got a ridiculously strong squad compared to the majority of teams in the league. We've got one of the best managers in football currently. We've got a team of lads in from Barca who are looking to shake things up and ensure we build for the next 10, 15, 20 years at least. We've got a fantastic stadium. Fuck me, I even seen City win the league, and to paraphrase the tinpot pisscan bully from trafford, I never thought I'd see that "...in my lifetime."

As a City fan, what's not to love?

This board is not always wholly reflective of what it seems the match-goers feel. After all, after a defeat (usually a cup or Europe as I've not seen us lose at home this year!) you get Mancini Must Go threads, yet at the match that day and the following week the one song that is repeated is the Mancini one.

Anyway, back to the paracetamol!

Great post and while I really dont think we can qualify from the group in CL beating Real Madrid who need a win to secure qualification would be a massive statement

If you want to know how good we are and how we are "really" viewed in world football, go back to the footage of the game at the Bernabeu and watch the Special One's reaction to their winner.

Not often you see him like that, if at all and tells you all you need to know.

Good post that lad, although when the forum-loonies have had their mid-day meds and are allowed recreation time on the internet, you are for it.

My tin hat is already on, mate.

It's been a good half hour yet though, and no Rag insults so far. Still, there's plenty of time for the usual suspects to chip in.

40 years of watching the blues and finally one of Europes best coming to town...... i will start thinking about sunday on friday, we might not qualify but while there is a chance we have to go for it
