Just literally finished reading Robert Harris's rather excellent Conclave. It appears that it takes the Holy Spirit 4 or 5 counts before he gets his message through to the cardinal- electors, so we should probably know tomorrow evening. One vote today, 2 before lunch tomorrow, 2 after lunch.

No idea who'll win of course, though Cardinal Parolin, the long-serving Secretary of State, seems a clear favourite. But the improbably named Cardinal Pizzaballa might be a good outside bet.

Poor old Albino Luciani, John Paul 1. Didn't want the job, but was convinced to take it. Died after a month. Known as the Smiling Pope. Seemed like an all round good egg.
