The North Stand at Maine Road?

Wasent there a few games with seating at the top and standing at the bottom ..sure there was but stella has clouded the mind ..

Your memory is playing tricks with you. The seats went in for the start of the 72-73 season.

The 71-72 season was the first I started going to all the games and I went in the North Stand. I don't know if anyone else remembers this, but for most of the season for each game, a different section would be closed off and empty so the stand wasn't fully open until quite late on.

I used to stand behind the goal, and it was a lively atmosphere in there. I remember being pissed off when the club announced it was going to be seated, but I quickly got used to the Kippax. I can't say I noticed much of a difference in the atmosphere, but the view wasn't great. I could never see the nearest few yards of the pitch, which meant if Buzzer was playing the game of his life all I saw was his head occasionally bobbing in and out of view.

When the North stand was standing only I remember going there a few times but the wall at the front was quite high, much higher than the wall had been at the front of the old, uncovered scroreboard end.

As I was only a small boy then I went to the Kippax where the wall was lower and so it was more comfortable to lean against to watch the match.

Also Wigan's home kit was Royal blue shirts, white shorts and socks (like Everton) and this away kit was all white, so sky blue shirts and white shorts would have been a bit too close. Don't forget that Wigan were in the Northern Premier League then and most teams only had a home and away kit then (no 3rd kit), Wigan probably just changed the shirts and used the same shorts and socks.

Black and white telly! Needed a decent contrast between the kits, otherwise only the rich man on the hill could watch the game on telly!

when the scoreboard end was developed it took two off seasons
they put up the roof first with no seats, so the following season we had a standing area behind the goal with a roof
the atmosphere was electric and i thought much better than the kippax
we also had an excellent season on the pitch and should have gone on to win the league

over the next summer they put in the seats and so that was the end of the standing north stand.

Yes thats how I remember it,very lively and noisy.I recall a game against Airdrie in a competition(Anglo-Scottish cup I think)and despite a small crowd a good atmosphere .Seem to remember it was split into separate concrete bays rather than one big open area.

That was to avoid surges.

I used to frequent the Scoreboard End but moved to the Kippax while it was being redeveloped. I never liked the Kippax, the sightlines were poor. There always seemed to be someone bigger than me obstructing my view despite being 5'11". I also found it to be claustrophobic because of the low roof. As for the toilets, enough said.

It was great to move into the North Stand when it opened. I got my first season ticket in there when it was converted to seating and remained there till I moved away in 1977.

The attempt to avoid surges didn't really work. It could be carnage in there when we scored. Thought I was a gonner when we scored against the gooners.

Just had a thought about that game against Wigan, if I remember correctly Derek Temple was playing for them. He scored the winner For Everton against Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley in the 66 cup final.
