The photos thread

Pics like these remind you just how much you have to be thankful for, I sometimes think the nerves/anticipation/dread felt before a game are bad!! Just imagine those last moments before going "over the top", hope as many as possible in that pic came back.

The pic was taken around 7.00 am, the men went over at 7.30 am. The Germans knew the Battalion had situated themselves in the lane and quickly focused their firepower on them as they emerged.

Their war diary noted, 'The Battalion was badly cut up by enemy’s machine gun fire suffering 508 casualties and 21 officer casualties. At dusk we returned to the trenches but held and consolidated Sunken Road. The Battalion fought nobly but had no chance of success against enemy’s machine gun fire.'

Fcking hell.......just imagine being part of that.... we all need to remember.

The pic is a still from the film the Battle of the Somme. Cameramen Geoffrey Malins and John McDowell were there to record footage of the battle and it was shown to huge audiences in cinemas in the UK.

Peter Jackson used his computer wizardry on a lot of the Battle of the Somme footage in his film They Shall Not Grow Old....

In the trailer and much more so in the film, you see the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers in the sunken road, just prior to going over the top.

If you've not seen this film you must see it, in fact everyone should see it. You're right, we all need to remember, but with no one left alive who fought, what are we remembering? This film attempts to put you in the army boots of an ordinary British Tommy using original footage and the voices of the veterans, it's a masterpiece.
