A very moving book.
I've read it twice despite it having the same ending and seen the film which funnily enough............

this is my third reading of the book.
it has so much more in it than just alexander's story.

the part when krakauer is stuck up on the glacier for 3 days,
having just failed to climb the unclimbed north face of the devil's thumb,
and he thinks fuck it and smokes the weed he'd been saving for a celebration,
gets the munchies,
decides to cook some oats and smells burning.
turns round and the binbag is on fire having thrown the match into it that he lit the stove with.

burnt his hand putting it out.
burnt the inner lining of the tent
(his father's really expensive tent that he'd been reluctant to lend to him)
thus reducing the temperature by 30 degrees
and having to smell the smoke for days hahaha.


the film is also very good.
sean penn directed it to make mccandless out kindly,
as did krakauer in the book.

and however naive he was,
supertramp was a true adventurer.

It was my lad who got it and gave it to me as he said I'd enjoy it.
Shortly after he fucked off on a wander round Central America. Oh how I laughed.

He ended up doing Central America, Mexico, Cuba, south Asia, including an island called Tiamen, came home saved up and did them all again. On the second visit to Tiamen he met his wife and now lives in Australia.

I like to think it was the book that inspired him but I wonder if it was something I said.

I made a monumental fox paw. Tried to add more to the Himalayas travel post and add a picture but managed to delete the thing. Anyway too traumatised to retype it just now but will try again soon. Here's me at Gokyo glaciers about 5000m with Everest in the back ground - face blurred in case Maoist rebels hunt me down as I shouldn't really have been in that area alone. The most desolate place on earth but you wouldn't want to hang around too long.

that really is an incredible photograph.

the effort it must've taken to get there.



at least you made it difficult for the maoists to spot you by wearing a fucking shiny blue jacket :)
