the plan what is it

The plan is 442
We have Mike Bassett managing our team and I could not believe what I was seeing last night,

We should not have set up that way against Bayern, they had a 5/6 man midfield which left Ferdy and Yaya totally outnumbered, this format only worked against United because they were also playing 442 and when they changed it with Cleverly they started to control the game but at 4-0 who cared.

But we did set up that way and it was clear right from the start that it did not work, but what did the manager do, nothing. We should have taken a forward off and strengthened midfield, and I am not talking from hindsight. I was screaming it right from the start.

Gary Neville was also constantly on about this and he summed it up perfectly when he said that if our manager was English he would be slated for being tactically naive and not up to the modern game.

If we continue to play 442 then I am not only worried about the CL campaign but more so about the prem. Other teams will have seen that last night and our managers inability to act and pack midfield against us, we could end up mid table.

This is not a kneejerk reaction this is a real concern, his first substitution from 442 was to change one of the front 2, it wasn’t the problem who the 2 were they could not get the ball.

Under Bobby we had 5 in mid field 433 or 451 and it worked for the last 3 years, it just needed pace adding. Not ripping up

behind the closed doors mancini was being setup by marwood and the new CEO and Txiki Begiristain to fail last season and it worked

now with the 3 putting there heads on a block and backing the new boss let see who will take the full blame when the shit hits the fan they will run to the hills and turn there backs on the new manager and point to the players not give him a chance

-- Thu Oct 03, 2013 1:43 pm --

Now i was a Mancini fan, and think he did a great job and i slightly agree with your deduction that we were lacking in CM, but we never performed greatly in CL under him, so does this mean the 433 approach was wrong?

To suggest Pellegrini, is anything but a top class manager, is laughable. He has taken teams with lesser squads to quarters and semi's in the CL, and because we were beaten by, currently, the best team on the planet, doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's doing.

Knee jerk reaction rules again on Bluemoon.

Read the full post this is not Kneejerk, we are getting outnumbered in mid field, not just this game but others too, for gods sake we were lucky against Hull.

I have posted because I am really concerned that we have a manager who could not or would not try to change things until it was way too late

Also our record in Europe may not have been good but we have had had 2 groups of death. Our record in the prem has been good but if we stick to 2 up front we could be stuffed in the prem too. Two up front with Tevez was more like an extra midfielder at times

a none losing record at home in the champions league in 2 of the hardest groups ever in 2 years TAKE A BOW MANCINI

Everyone around me cheered like hell when he took Dzeko off and brought Negredo on, I nearly cried. It was going to solve nothing.

As for Mancini, whilst he used 4-5-1 in the very early days and used 4-2-3-1 reasonably regularly I'd still say he favoured playing two strikers. At the start of 11/12 it was Aguero and Dzeko, then Balotelli came in for Dzeko and once Tevez was back it was him and Aguero. Now when Tevez played he dropped deep so it became a 4-2-3-1 at times but we rarely started with just one up front.

Yes we did often have 2 strikers under Mancini but one of them was usually the wide player in a front three such as Kun (playing left) main striker Silva (playing right)

Giving width with the front three aloud to rotate at will.

Then behind that we had three ball winning and defensive/central midfielders such as

Barry Yaya Millner

This gave us mobility and packed the centre of midfield to stop us being overrun and to impose ourselves on the other team,

We played away in Bayern and Madrid like this and could have got a result in Bayern if the ref understood what a penalty was and should have got a result in Madrid.

Last night was a simple ridged 442 with no variation or options. It was a throw back in football terms

Not sure what the fucking plan is, but if it's going badly against Everton on Saturday, I wouldn't be surprised to see Pellegrini on the sidelines with a pair of underpants on his head and a pencil up each nostril; shouting "wibble" at anyone who'll listen.

I agree last night was a flat 4-4-2 which was shocking to see but you can't rewrite history as you see fit. Under Mancini we lined up 4-2-2-2 with two holding midfielders, two wide players (at least one of whom cut inside) and two strikers for the majority of games. Aguero can't have played on the left more than half a dozen times under Mancini.

Hang on, I've just read your post again and a thought has come to me.... you're not completely joking about the underpants, the pencils & the wibble are you?

I've calmed down a tad since last night, but I still can't understand why he didn't try and change things until it was too late.
I have very little confidence in Mr Pellegrini at the moment, and he's going to have to seriously change things around to change that.
The United game aside, things are very worrying. I won't be screaming for his head just yet, but we need to get a good run of wins under our belt now.
I dread to think what effect losing to Everton on Saturday would have, on both the team and the fans.

Last night at the match I was sat with my 14 year old son whose knowledge of football is basically what he gets told by his manager on a Sunday morning or 'FIFA14. After 10 mins he turns around to me as everyone around is shouting to take this player and that player off to say 'why doesn't he move Aguero to the left hand side of midfield for 10 mins to see if it helps and let Nasri play inside'

I said to him next time we will sit behind the dugouts and you can pass your notes onto Mr Pellegrini :-)
