Where does this "prawn sandwich brigade" phrase stem from?

You can buy prawn sandwiches from most places, think they even sell them in PoundLand, yet football fans mainly use this phrase when describing a more upperclass fan.

I've never gone corporate at a footy match in my life (just can't afford it) however even if I did spend £xxx amount on a ticket I wouldn't go out of my way to scoff on a mingin' prawn sandwich, I'm sure there is some nicer food on offer (caviar & potato pie yum yum)

So what is actually served at matches for the corporate brigade?
Poundland prawn sandwiches?

Roy Keane started it.
when referring to the cetrain kind of Rag fan that turns up, expects to be entertained, win 4-0 and never verbally get behind the team.........sounds familiar doesn't it!!!

the hospitality at city is excellent, never had a prawn butty there though

Yes , it's all Roy Keanes fault .....

he was having a go at their fans who basically turned up in hospitality packages , and didn't really back the side vocally ....

but then keane was never the quiet type , and didn't just stop at bollocking some of the fans either ..... he was often questioning his teamates committment too.

The OP's right. There's nothing upper class or corporate about prawns. You can buy a million of them for 50p at Iceland.

It needs updating. The crayfish and rocket brigade, I reckon.
