The Queen is Dead - the Smiths

Never made a bad album, Johnny Marrs guitar playing is up there with anybody else. The lyrics, awesome, they only upset the mentally challenged. Saw them at the `Free Trade Hall` on the tour that the `sun` wanted them banned. Manchesters finest for quality and longevity.
why did the sun want them banned?

The S*n claimed that songs like Reel Around The Fountain and The Hand That Rocks The Cradle were celebrating child abuse and had the band labelled in a similar vein as Gary Glitter would later be reported on.

And which Mod added The Smiths to the title of the thread ;)

I think they're a decent band with a few excellent songs.

Don't think they're anywhere near as good as people take them for.

You see that all depends, you are an angst ridden kid with nothing really to be angst ridden about, but when the Smiths came about there was plenty to be angst ridden about, it's more than music it's memories of a very bleak time in Manchester's history, a time of urban decay, hopelessness and change, the music kind of spanned eras, ushering us into this post industrial era, put with one foot firmly in the past, casting a beady eye over the debris of a one proud City and the people that lived in it.

If you look at them as just a band, you won't get it and will tire of them, but for those us that were in our formative years when they started to rise to prominence they mean a lot, because the music reflected the bleakness of the times

Spot on. At the time This Charming Man came out, I was living in a freezing cold £19 a week bedsit in Sale and on the dole.
At the time wonderful Radio one would be playing Wham's ''Club Tropicana drinks are free.....'' and the videos of the day would be Duran Duran on a big boat sailing around an exotic place somewhere......

Then This Charming Man came out and it was the antithesis of all of that crap and said everything to me about my life.
The B side, Jeane, said even more... ''there's ice on the sink where we bathe, so how can you call this a home, when you know it's a grave....'' which summed up the bedsit perfectly.

Like you, it wasn't just about the band, it was where they were coming from and where they wanted to go....

The very fact that the haters click on every Smiths thread to say exactly the same comment each time shows that they pissed off quite a few people, a sure sign that they were doing things right!
If I started a Psychedelic Furs thread, how many people would feel compelled to comment negatively on it ;)

Oh I don't disagree with their social importance. I was just talking musically.

For example, the Sex Pistols are fucking shite. Sid Vicious couldn't even play bass when he joined them. Lydon was an awful twat and they were the biggest nobheads in the world at their peak. But they're the most important punk band of all time because punk is supposed to be shit and reflect how shit everything is. Shit. Shit.

A lot of people related to them in the way you've just sort of explained people related to the Smiths.

But if you just listen to them as music you would be right, and if was just music they would have been long forgotten by now, but it was Social Commentary and a kind of marking of history, at the time Manchester lent it's self well to it.

The Sex Pistols shit! There music was fuckin awesome, loud, angry in your face, made to upset the establishment. The alternative was to listen Genesis, with every perfect note in the perfect pitch with the perfect timing zzzzzzzzz.
Bamds like the Pistols, Clash, Jam and Smiths were so relavent to people like me who were teenagers at the time, as well as many other bands.

I know it's BM heresy, but I'm with you Darren.

The only worthwhile Smiths-related thing I've ever seen or heard is that video you put on YouTube of you listening to one of their dirges. Now that was hilarious! Post a link...
As you wish.....
