I always found the media portrayal of him rather strange. He was vilified after he left the Smiths, by the music weeklies. They were definitely all pro Morrissey.

His musical output is magnificent. Regardless of his Smiths output, which will be his legacy. He did fantastic stuff with Billy Bragg, The Pretenders and Kirsty McColl. Thats without even considering Electronic.

In regards to his status of Manchester most important musician, imo he is 2nd to Bernard Sumner. Think Joy Division, New Order, Electronic and then all his production work, trumps Johnny. Bernard Sumners work is truly original and changed pop music in this country . Johnny is a traditional pop artist who writes great pop songs.
 
Had a chat with him Celebrating outside Maine Road on the evening after the Blackburn promotion win. Definitely the sensible one in the Smiths partnership. Morrissey is now outed as a complete loon and his solo songs are rubbish.

Also read and enjoyed Johnny's book. Seen him live a few times and always put on a good show, has a decent voice to go with his undoubted talents on guitar. A really cool guy, great musician and a blue, whats not to like about him.

For the guys mentioning Bernard Sumner - I‘ve been listening to some Mark Reeder remixes which feature a lot of Bernard. Really good stuff
 
Having endured, and I use that word deliberately, fucking endured, those ubiquitous, tired, boring and predictable as fuck guitar riffs. Add in the penchant for letting them run for what seemed forever, only intensified my utter hatred of how guitar riffs were going.

Enter Johnny and he made that mutherfucker sing in a way that still makes me feel better about the world.

I seen them a couple of times in Glasgow and I can assure you, we loved the bastards as much as any Manc.

As a young stupid guy, I would instantly dismiss anyone who didnt get them, as cunts. Not as bad today, but there is still.a residue. So Johnny, thank you. He had such an influence on indy guitar that resonates today. And showed that tired old shit riffs that most bands used were best fucked out of every equation.. anybody who disagrees is a ****. :).
 
The Smiths changed my life as a teenager. I rarely listen to them now as I want to keep it special.

Marr came to one show I was DJing at and stood at the bar with members of Haven. He watched one band for three songs and left. I understood Joe Moss had asked him to look at them.
 
Great bloke / muso, but questionable use of hair dye. You have to wonder about someone that age that doesn't drink, isn't fat, and has no grey hair. Dodgy as fuck.
 
I didn’t drink for four months when I fell ill and the weight dropped off. I think the post-pub fried chicken is a mistake as you shouldn’t go to bed having just eaten.
