The term "Legend".

Overused by many and the significance and meaning underrated by all. I hear many talk about Carlos Tevez and Shay Given as legends but I disagree. I think they can be cult hereos and if they are successful in terms of honours won, then and only then can they become modern day legends.

In my opinion you can be a legend through the exceptional consistency of the performances you gave throughout many hundreds of games and you can be a legend through the amount of goals you score and the success that they bring along with them.

The other thing is that since the days of Bell, Lee and Summerbee the amount of loyalty in the game has changed. Money has become a major aspect of the game and players chop and change clubs like women change their shoes. If Tevez stays and manages to score the same amount of goals season after season then he could become a legend, but right now he is a cult hero. I personally think it is too late for Given. He is very good but he won't be around long enough to make the impact to consider him as such, the same with David James in my opinion, though both will be fondly remembered for years to come once they've retired.

Does anyone agree or disagree with this? Anything to add?

tevez is a city legend simply because he chose city over united while he is in our prime, when chelsea bought drogba he has been there focal point since everything went good for them tevez will be ours, we will all look to the day we signed tevez and say hes the man that changed city forever, not that cnut robinho

In my Lifetime the Goat, Kinkladze and Uwe are Legends and I agree that Tevez could go on to be a City legend too.

I think you can only be classed a legend when you look back on a career. You can't really call someone a legend whilst still playing. Tevez move to us will be legendary but that won't maker him a legendary player. Only time will tell but if he keeps on going like he is, there won't be any doubt.

Yeah but is he actually good or just keeps getting played because he a fan favourite now

Genuinly interested because never heard of the guy unsuprisingly!!

He's nothing special as a player to be honest, but then no-one is in the squad, so the passion he has for the club gives him the edge to overcome the fact that basically he's a pretty average footballer. Can run all day though and isn't afraid of a tackle.

agreed, he agrees with someone who says the word is overused and then quotes players who have done nothing that the op said was needed to fit the category

have said loads of times on here that legend is bandied around far too easily for players who are good, great or have been cult heroes, but far from legendary status

Doesnt make him a legend though, we were relegated twice with him in our team. I agree that he obviously had some affection for the club but that along with some silky skills now and again does not a legend make!
