The term "sh**house" in football

Clearly, in the last 5 years or so, use of this term has been popularised in certain parts of the media as referring to someone who employs 'the dark arts' or is some sort or master manipulator or referees.

E.g. "Simeone is the king of the shithouses."

But we all know that for decades the only people in football being referred to as shithouses were those that ducked out of tackles or didn't fancy a bit of the physical stuff against a big defender.

As is "Samaras, you fucking shithouse!"

Simeone is about as far removed from a true shithouse as you can get. A true shithouse would be, well, shitting it faced with the prospect of coming up against Simeone and his ilk on the pitch..

Are you with me or against me?
Yeah, when I was younger a shithouse meant a coward. The meaning has definitely changed in recent years, more of a backhanded compliment than an insult now (although that’s more “shithousery” than “shithouse”).

I can well remember taunting Charlie George at The Baseball Ground with a chant to the tune of
'Son of My Father' by Chicory Tip.
"Oh Charlie Charlie, Charlie Charlie Charlie Charlie, SHITHOUSE George".
How we laughed but it was a backhanded compliment, he did well for Derby.
He had the last laugh by scoring in front of the City fans and giving us the two handed V's with relish. You didn't get cards or a fine for that in the 70's.

Anyone that starts threads about the origin and meaning of the word ‘shithouse’ is displaying prime shithousery.
