I used to live in Uganda and Uncle was a term of greeting for any man of marriage age that they were not sure were married, it was the same for Aunty. Did not necessarily relate to older people just the marrying age as I said, seems to now have entered our lexicon and been twisted slightly to be an insult and not a greeting.
