They're at regular intervals, rhythymic, similar to someone banging on the inside of the hull. Very unlikely to be anything else. Using sonar should help pinpoint their location.I know people don't mean anything malicious by it but I'm inclined to agree with mossideblue.
I guess the reason this has made headlines despite much bigger mayhem in the world is a combination of it's the Titanic and it's such a macabre situation. If they are not to be rescued you really hope that it's suffered some sort of catastrophic failure which means they knew little about it.
