The Tottenham Thread 12/13

Spurs drew at Swansea last season, so that's two extra points won today that we didn't have in 2011-12.

We're now just a point behind our tally from 31 matches last season and a win next time out at home to Everton will put us a point above last season's total after 32 games and set a new club Premier League Era record of 60 points from 32 matches.

If you compare the identical fixtures against last season, Spurs are now a point ahead.

Yes, Everton have amassed a very impressive 10 points from the last 18 on offer....

...almost as good as the 12 points Spurs have won during the same period.

Over on Glory Glory, we're having an interesting discussion about what would be the definitive all-time best Spurs XI.

Here's my choice:

Vivian Woodward should be the first name on anyone's all-time greatest Spurs XI - he was the greatest player in the world of his generation and lead Great Britain to two Olympic Games gold medals.

We've had some great goalkeepers over the years but Pat Jennings is the obvious choice.

Mike England and Ledley King in central defence for me.

Tommy Clay at left back with Cyril Knowles on the right.

Dave Mackay and Danny Blanchflower in central midfield.

I'd opt for the flying Welshman Gareth Bale to partner Woodward the wings.

And upfront Martin Chivers to partner Jimmy Greaves.

Dibble, Charvet, Kernaghan, Vaughan, Frontshek, Buster Phillips, Pollock, Brannan, Dabo, Corradi and Samaras would piss that Spurs side.

Are Everton in that good of form? I would expect them to beat Stoke and Reading at home.

Drawing at home to Villa and losing to Norwich aren't results that are good for a side competing for top 4. The only impressive result is beating City at home, but they usually do anyway.

I'm sorry, I'm having difficulty visualising that team. Any chance you could do me a little diagram?

I admire your dedication and thorough approach.

I would like to see spurs finish in the top 4 this season but it aint going to be easy with your run of games. You have the best player in the league in Bale. Vertongen aint bad either.

Your team is top class but there is a sense of inevitability when it comes to loosing your best players like Bale and even Vertongen.

If Spurs can manage a Top Four finish, I can't see Bale going anywhere - he seems a very well-grounded young man with a new family who loves going back to Wales at every opportunity.

What attraction would Spain hold for him at this stage of his career?

Perhaps he'll be off in another few years though.

I dont see the point of staying any longer at spurs, well apart from the fact that playing every game will stand to enable him to continue developing his talent and confidence and a staring berth cannot be guaranteed in clubs like madrid and even city ;).

But I believe that he is good enough to become not only a regular starter but also an important factor in any club in the world.

Ultimately he is a professional and he must consider what is good for him financially and also professional success in terms of winning trophies. He is well grounded and a family man but that applies to many of the top class footballers and Im sure his family understands what being a professional footballer is all about and I hope Bale understands that also.

If Real Madrid come knocking with a large cheque, would Bale (or, more pertinently, Levy) turn them down? In an ideal world, he'd stay put for another season, perhaps 2 at the most, then move on.

Its cute that you actually believe that spain doesnt hold anymore of an attraction than spain but you know it isnt true. How about the chance to double his wages, better weather, better lifestyle, the chance to play with better players, the chance to actually win the champions league rather than just play in it?

Well Spurs have a "special relationship" with Real Madrid, so I'm sure that when the time is right for all parties, Bale will be off there.

Our U21s are now 2-0 up at Anfield.

haha its so cute the stuff you believe, your special relationship with madrid amounts to them saying we will have this player when we want him, what do you get out of this relationship exactly?

It came from the Modric transfer earlier this season.

Spurs are due a pre-season friendly against Real Madrid at the Lane and perhaps access to some more of their Academy players (Ceballos is doing really well for us at the moment).

In return, Real get first refusal on our players, which obviously would include Gareth Bale.

seems a bit of a dry bumming rather than anything special

pucker up spurs
