The Tottenham Thread 12/13

Spurs' academy at 19-21 level looks to be one of the best in the country at the moment. Do any of the kids have genuine high-end potential (not Livermore level, but Bale level) or is it more of a team effort?

There's some terrific talent in the youth squads but it's very difficult to tell whether that will translate into regular first team football for Spurs, or at another Premier League club.

However, there's been eleven Academy graduates who have featured in our first team squads this season...

Jake Livermore
Harry Kane
Andros Townsend
Steven Caulker
Ryan Mason
Adam Smith
Tom Carroll
Jon Obika
Kevin Stewart
Shaquile Coulthirst
Jordan Archer

...I think that's a pretty impressive record of bringing through youngsters.

As for anyone being as good as Gareth Bale, players like that only come around once in a generation (if you're very lucky!).

But we do have very high hopes for his clone Kenneth McEvoy...

Heard of the two highlighted, who from the rest will make the grade in your opinion?

I think they're all good enough to make a decent living out of professional football but as I said before, it's almost impossible to say which will become top class players.

Ryan Mason does remind me of Glenn Hoddle at the same stage of his development and Tom Carroll has already amassed an impressive number of first team appearances under his belt.

Of the strikers, Kane looks like he could well make the grade and Coulthirst & McEvoy have impressive goalscoring records this season.

One other player who has yet to feature in a first team squad is Alex Pritchard who had a fantastic U19 NextGen Series this season.

I know you didn't ask for my opinion, but for what it's worth, I think Tom Carroll could turn out to be a very very good midfielder. As THFC6061 said he's been in and around the first team a bit, and not just when a game is done and dusted and he hasn't looked nervous by it.

Looks like a Leon Britton type, always looking to receive the ball, even in tight areas, and keeps it moving. He's not just a sideways passer either, he's put in some great through balls. He's quite a small lad but doesn't look afraid to put himself about, I'm not going to say he will be as good a player, but he is Modric-esque at times.

I'm hoping he'll start against Basel on Thursday, it's obvious to all with Sandro's unfortunate injury that we are very reliant on Parker and Dembele, and in recent times there's been games where both of them have looked very leggy. I do hope young Tom is higher in the pecking order than Huddlestone, who did once look very promising in a Spurs shirt, but unfortunately seems to have been ruined by injuries and has done very little of note when on the pitch for the last few seasons.

Think Carroll will have done enough to secure himself a PL loan next season, Fulham were interested but for whatever reason that didn't pan out, if they've been following his progress closely this season I think they'll consider him a good player to go for.

He didn't come through at Spurs though, you paid £5M for him. Southampton have brought some good players through, Bale included.

-- Mon Apr 01, 2013 7:43 pm --

That's hardly a glowing reference ;-)

Where did I say that Bale was a product of our Academy?

I was asked by LoveCity if any of our young players could be compared with Bale and I answered that no, there isn't.

Oh... and Bale actually cost us £7.5m from Southampton.

FA BASEL FACTFILE:

Thursday night's Europa League quarter-final, first leg represents our first meeting with FC Basel.

Here are a few facts on the Swiss champions.

- FC Basel kicked-off their 2012-13 European campaign back in July, when they took on FC Flora Tallin in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.

- They progressed to the play-offs for the Champions League where they lost 3-1 on aggregate to CFR 1907 Cluj.

- They finished runners-up in Group G of the Europa League behind Genk, beating Sporting 3-0 at home as the Portuguese giants finished bottom.

- Murat Yakin took over from Heiko Vogel as coach during the group stage in October. He was capped 49 times by Switzerland and played for Grasshopper, Stuttgart, Fenerbache, Kaiserslautern and Basel, who he captained to three Swiss titles and two Swiss Cups.

- Basel beat Dnipro 3-1 on aggregate in the Round of 32 and then Zenit 2-1 in the Round of 16, where they held onto a 2-0 first leg lead in Russia despite having Marcelo Diaz sent off just before half-time.

- Domestically, they are well positioned to defend their Swiss Super League title, sitting top by three points from Grasshopper Club.

- FC Basel are on a run of two defeats in 22 matches in all competitions and one loss in the last 15. They have won six of their last seven matches in all competitions.

- They beat FC Luzern 4-0 on Monday with goals from Serey Die, Diaz, Salah and Philip Degen.

- This is the fourth time we've met a Swiss team in Europe following Grasshopper in the UEFA Cup in 1973 (a 9-2 aggregate win), FC Luzern in the InterToto Cup in 1995 (not officially considered a first team game by Spurs) and Young Boys in the Champions League play-off in 2010 (6-3 on aggregate).

- FC Basel eliminated Manchester United in the group stages of the 2011-12 Champions League with a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford and 2-1 win at St Jakob Park.

- Christian Gross has coached both teams, while Thimothee Atouba played for both.

- FC Basel are the only domestic champions remaining in the Europa League. Meanwhile, we're the only previous winners still in the competition.

- Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is the only FC Basel player to play in every minute of Basel's campaign since the start of the group stage. Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen have played every minute for us.

- Basel have scored 10 of their 12 goals since the start of the group stage after the 60th minute, including six between the 76th minute and full-time.

Nobody cares.

Well you do obviously, otherwise why bother opening the thread and posting a reply?

There are plenty of threads on this Forum which I don't care about, yet somehow I can resist the urge to post in them.

You should really try to do the same.

You have in the past posted some reasonable stuff but my plan is to get a new printer, copy off all the wanky graphs you post and shove them up your fkn arse at WHL in a few weeks....

But then again, I doubt you'll be there, will you?

From what I gather, he's been following Spurs for an impressive time. If I am as connected to the modern world as he is near retirement, I'd be a very happy fella. He runs his website and tracks the stats (on his own I presume), I just think people are a little too disrespectful of that.

Leave him alone you pair of cocks.

Posts some interesting stuff, some not so interesting but oh well. It's a Spurs thread.

The spurs fans like GHoddle and spurssprinter might care.

There's just no need to be like that with him.
