If I go to the shop and buy a Mars Bar for £1, I've spent £1. Yes, I might go home and be convinced to sell it to my brother for £1.20, but I still SPENT £1 in o

Scenario 1: - I'm a schoolkid and I spend £1 on a Mars Bar, with the aim of using it to bribe a girld I like into kissing me, it doesn't work so I then sell it to my brother for £1.20.

Scenario 2: - I'm a schoolkid and I spend £1 on a Mars Bar, with the aim of using it to bribe a girld I like into kissing me, it doesn't work so I then give it to

Why do you have to be a schoolkid?

What self respecting adult tries to bribe a girl into kissing him with a Mars Bar? Jimmy Saville?

So you're tying to say that Spurs paying £16,505,000 for Modric and allowing him to leave on a free is exactly the same as Spurs paying £16,505,000 for Modric and later selling him for £33,300,000?

You might want to think that out a bit more.

No m8 what he is saying is spend is spend, you're talking net spend, he is talking total spend, its 2 different things you're coming at it from your angle he is coming at it from his and both have valid points, your net spend is 180m or their abouts is what you're saying and thats fine but spend is spend which ever way you slice it. If you have spent 500m and recouped 320m of that then some would see that as good business and balancing the books others would see it as 180m spent on winning nothing, it all depends on whether you take a pro spurs viewpoint such as yourself or an anti spurs or realistic viewpoint such as the majority of people. So you might want to rethink your attitude a little bit to.

OK, Let's move from the football field to the casino.

I walk-in and buy £100 worth of chips.

I then cash-in the chips in for £100.

I then buy £100 worth of chips.

I then cash-in the chips in for £100.

I then buy £100 worth of chips.

I then cash-in the chips in for £100.

I then walk-out of the casino.

Have I spent £300?

You wasted your evening and didn't win anything-a bit like Tottenham do each year for a season of football,

you sold Carrick and Berbatov to United , Modric and Bale to Madrid for profit in the region of £100 million, but in the mean while won fuck all on the football pitch, you have a history of not being able to keep your best players even going back to the Gascoigne era.Your only notable triumph is what profit you sell your players for and nothing else.

Id stick your Ossie Ardiles FA Cup song on to remind you of the good times mate

Yes you have still spent £300 , You have however not lost £300

I hated the Redknapp wankfest but now I hope Spurs get Champions League this year. I like AVB and Levy looks like he's playing a blinder so far. Spurs challenging the elite will make for possibly the most open premier league to date. Which in my opinion is a good thing. Liverpool and Arsenal in particular should be shitting themselves.

I guess they are perhaps a CB and RB short, not far away but perhaps Kaboul and Vertongan can forge a good partnership

What is the point of arguing over what the definition of "spend" is?!

1.) Surely what matters is the difference between what you spend and what you bring in, as that determines how much you have left.

2.) Buying football players is an investment so even if you spend more, you usually have something that is worth more.

Maybe under Redknapp. Maybe you didn't see the media sharpening their knives over the years with Gerry Francis, Ramos, Hoddle, Jol, Ossie, El Tel etc. AVB they had fun with last season too

so?

Sheikh Mansour covered our expenditure, would you really turn your nose up if a new customer came in and bought/invested(whatever field you're in) a load of money because they weren't from the demographic/industry you're used selling to, even though he'll pay completely up front so you have the cash there and then?

I have never seen the venom and vitriol thrown at Spurs that City have had these last few years, ever

I'm not bothered about the money argument, just interested in knowing whether the media will apply pressure on AVB to win something now he's spent over a hundred million pounds.

Anything less than a trophy will be failure and AVB ought to be sacked.

No one gets stick the like of which City receive - comes from being the enemy of Man Utd whom the media caters for more than anyone else.

If Bale goes, Spurs are going about replacing him the only way possible, by buying 4-5 top quality players.

I don't like Lamela who seems to be linked with everyone, and I don't know much about Capoue. The only question mark I'd put against the signings to date is that Capoue and Paulinho seem very similar to Sandro. You need balance in midfield, and it's no good having 4 powerhouses in midfield if you lack a Van der Vaart or a Modric to play that though ball.

Exciting times for Spurs fans, and it's good for football to have ambitious teams. I'd imagine that selling Bale would have been every Spurs fan's worse nightmare, but the way it's being done leaves you with expectation. Will be tough to expect a new team to gel overnight into title contenders, particularly when Utd, Chelsea and City are likely to be stronger than before, but to improve on last season would be good, and then you can move on from there, no longer reliant on one player.

What do you buy football players for?

All the papers agree you're spending the Bale money.

Still confident he is staying?

If Gareth Bale needed any convincing that Spurs are serious about challenging for the League Title, I don't think the club could have done any more during this summer's transfer window.

Yes, I still think he will stay.

so you have spent over 100m and yet keeping a 100m player at the club? in the same widow. ruining football if you ask me.

90% of football clubs are run with transfer budgets where incomings have to be matched to outgoings

In the Premiership, commercial income & TV income, merit payments, Champions League income mean that if you buy players of the right quality, and if you have a good manager then those outgoing transfer fees can generate income. Scarcely a week goes by now without City and Utd announcing a new commercial partner. That might be Ridsdale economics, but fortunately for City and Spurs, neither club has to go into debt to fund the transfer buys so the risk is not there.

-- Wed Aug 21, 2013 6:20 pm --

SSN personal terms agreed on a £30m deal. Subject to a medical to be completed Thursday morning
