The Transfer Window Countdown

Whilst I won't change anything for the treble, the 4 in a row was a curse that set this club back a few years in my opinion.

Made us lazy, put some in the club to think everything was a given and we were on easy mode and even as fans I think we took for granted how difficult and a privilege it is to win a trophy not just the PL or CL.

I know it's the rags, but it reminds me of the mid 2000s when them lot went 4 years without winning the league, and I think they only won an FA Cup and League cup in that time. They got battered nearly every year in Europe. They signed utter dross after the treble in 99 and Ferguson was getting left behind by Wenger and Mourinho.
I remember rags wanting SAF out in 2004 or 2005.

In my opinion he’s going to take a long time to adjust to the pace of the premier league. I don’t think he was the very best we could have signed but he was available. It’s probably harsh to say he’s average as there is a player there but don’t think he will reach anywhere near KDB level.
nah then considering they’re two different players with two different roles

In looking for news about Ederson, I came across this in Gaughan's twitter feed which underlines the point about Manchester City's declining transfer activity.

Interesting take, and a good comparison.

Anyone got a non paywalled version?

After the treble season, they won 3 of the next 4 PL’s, 7 out of the next 11 (without 93.20 would have been 8 out of 12 and was 8 out of 13) and never finished lower than 3rd. They did go 3 years without winning the PL and had 2 seasons without winning a trophy though!
Some disaster class…

My point was mate that in the mid-00s, they went barron for a few years because their transfer dealings leading up to that period were nothing short of shocking.

I was trying to link it to us by saying that our transfer business post treble is the reason why we may go a couple of seasons without winning anything major.

Tactically as well Ferguson changed. Ferdinand and Neville both said this. He reluctantly moved away from 4-4-2 that was seeing them get their backsides handed to them nearly every year by to a more modern 4-3-3.

Tactically we are seeing the game change now, and why I think Pep needs to move with the times a bit.

I don't like to compare to United, but there are similarities between where we are at now and where United were around 04/05

12 hours left, are we even signing anyone? Yet to offload any of our players as well. Akanji, Gundogan, Ortega? At least two must go to even comply with the registration rules...

Pretty unbelievable that Ortega turned down several approaches to stay as an unregistered squad player. Looking to secure himself a signing on fee in January I guess but still

I am still convinced that had we won that penalty shootout against Real Madrid, we would have gone on to win a second treble in a row, during our 4-in-a-row season.

I know, presumptuous, but nobody can persuade me otherwise. I think it would have given us such a lift, and with another CL final ahead of us we wouldn't have dropped our guard in the FA cup final after winning the league.

The comedown of last season may well have happened, but then the confidence may have been the difference when the shit hit the fan.

What ifs, right!?

Agree.

And I think the reason Pep didn't think we needed such a big rebuild at the start of last season was because he knew we could have won another treble in the 4 in a row year. We were effectively a final against United in the FA Cup away which we threw for being too hungover from the title win and a penalty shootout away against Real Madrid from likley beating a poor Dortmund team at Wembley in the final.

He overestimated how much left the players had in the tank.

Agree with that too.

However not to be forgotten amongst all that, was the 115 case that summer, which was before the hearing. And the ATP upcoming challenge too that the club knew about, and maybe went out their way a bit to 'prove' how little we can spend. Txiki also coming up to retirement, picking out the replacement, Pep needing to extend etc.

My point is while it was a part of it, I don't think last summer's inactivity was purely down to only a decision we didn't need much more because of the season's success.

I think so too. Such things are decided by small margins. I think had Gundogan stayed one more season then we'd have done it. The 23/24 Gundogan was still exceptional and might have got us through that Madrid wall at the Etihad. I think we needed to sign a better player than Kovacic, but Kovacic would have been fine had we retained Gundogan. Ifs, buts, maybes.
