I think there might be one or two in the driving lobby who would take issue with that statement.

costs a hell of a lot more to drive than smoke, victimised my arse.

Does your arse feel victimised? Fruity, baby...

There is a very strong argument that the number of smokers has not really decreased (or not as much as the government says), much of the evidence is on UK tobacco sales, but because of high taxation the amount of contraband tobacco (including cigarettes) has risen to huge proportions.

So now because of high taxation, there are loads of smokers who will not even be paying tax towards their medical treatment, governments know this but have painted themselves into a corner, the more they tax the more smuggling, eventually the amount of contraband will exceed official sales

Yep. I don't buy any cigs/tobacco from this country.

Give it 12 months and they'll be banning drinking as well

FROM THE BBC;
Drinking more than a pint of beer a day can substantially increase the risk of some cancers, research shows.

A large Europe-wide study in the British Medical Journal found that one-in-10 of all cancers in men and one-in-33 of all cancers in women are caused by past or current alcohol intake.

For alcohol-related cancers, one-in-three in men and one-in-20 in women are caused by any excessive drinking.

The Department of Health said it was taking action to target drinking.

Cancer charities say people should limit their drinking to lower the risk.

The study calculated that in 2008, current and past drinking habits were responsible for about 13,000 cases of alcohol-related cancer in the UK, out of a total of 304,000 cancer cases.

Previous research has shown a link between alcohol consumption and cancers of the oesophagus, liver, bowel and female breast.

whoosh again...

so to sum up, pubs are falling on their knees because selfish smokers can't contribute to their local economy and area without spoiling it for everyone else.

some bartenders are also unprofessional as they leave their post during working hours and aren't doing their job because they are also selfish, hence pissing off potential customers paying good money to their local who may not come back because of this.

and we wonder why things fail?

I heard that on the radio on my drive to work this morning and wondered if they'd eventually ban drinking too.

I don't smoke cigs anymore. I buy 10 a week for smoking herbal cigs. Thats £3.10 a week. That's a big drop from £45 a week (94% drop). The majority of that £45 was tax to the government. Wel they won't be getting that residual income from me anymore. The smoking ban and the rise in price over the last few years finally saw me off.

Fuel seems to be the next thing I'll be quitting too and getting a bike. Will the UK eventually outprice all the items that they heavily tax so that people just stop buying them? I know fuel is a commodity that we can't do without for transport and haulage, but maybe it'll get so bad that the hybrid or fully electrical mode of transport will be readily available sooner rather than later due to necessity??
