For those that care about being told the truth or at least a version that is comprehensible and doesnt include the phrase "broader community" here is my take on the real announcement the Club should have made on Monday night based on the leaks in the Guardian and Independent which do sound plausible. This was on another thread but I thought the club might see it quicker (!) with its own thread!!!

"Manchester City ("the Club") confirms that it has terminated discussions in respect of the transfer of Kaka from AC Milan. Following some weeks of discussion with AC Milan, the Club agreed a substantial fee with AC Milan, subject to due diligence and contract. As part of that due diligence process, the Club made requests to both the player's advisers and AC Milan to review Kaka's image rights and other intellectual property agreements that are material to the transfer of Kaka away from AC Milan. These documents are critical to finalising the personal terms of the players contract. Unfortunately, despite repeated requests, the Club was prevented from carrying out this review and, accordingly, was unable to finalise an offer of personal terms for the player. Contrary to media speculation, the Club believes that the signing of Kaka, in addition to adding one of the world's best players to its squad, would have been commercially viable. However, without being able to complete our due diligence, the Club was left with no option but to withdraw from negotiations. Garry Cook, Executive Chairman commented "We have got clear plans. This club deserves great players and the fans deserve great players".

I see we are now being slagged again in the Italian and English press. The statement above would have avoided such acrimony and maybe even kept us in with a shout at signing the player at some time in the future.

Good stuff.

You should work in PR, pr.....!

<winks>

That's a bit more like it. The club has never been good at PR and we don't have a full-time Communication person at the moment. Paul Tyrrell would have been better at putting the lid on some of the pure shite being spouted in papers like the Mirror but he wasn't so good at the positive stuff, or if he did put something out, it was usually totally unsubtle and could easily be seen as spin.

The club got badly caught out on Monday night and has been slow to respond. Eventually it's getting there; Cook was quite good yesterday I thought and came over loud and clear. We need to give out two essential messages. The first to the fans (and the wider sporting public) that sets out why the deal didn't come off but a second, more important one, to other potential high profile signings that they will read and think "Yeah - I want some of that".

So I'd have emhasised that the overall package we're offering is about much more than just £ per week or even commercial rights but about using GC's experience of working with two great sporting brands (Nike & Michael Jordan) to project and enhance the reputation and influence of any star player we sign.

Not sure what he can do for Craig Bellamy though!

you never know but the final straw could have been that dunnie refused to give up his shirt number !
