The Vikings in America

This is all very interesting but the sagas weren't written down until at least 200 years after the events. Plus they are fanciful at best.

Still, Vikings were in North America way before Columbus and the site at L'Anse Aux Meadows confirms this. It's also thought that they might have been even further inland as they think The Meadows was a ship repair base.

No mention of the Vinland map though. This was a map that was discovered in 1957, three years before The Meadows was found. This map has been proved fake, then not, then fake, then not over the years and shows a site in America from the 11th century.

It also shows the site was used for generations rather than the sagas which say a few decades at most.

Still...it's enough for the Americans the get their knickers in a twist especially around the second week of October.

I heard they went as far south as Boston. Then again Aztec mythology talks of the gods as white men with bears who travel on serpents across the sea. Think of how a white Viking with a beard on a serpent boat may have looked, and you see how that legend could begin.

The Basque fishermen beat Columbus by a good few hundred years as I understand it. Naturally they weren't about to go trumpeting about the wonderful bounty of Newfoundland cod though.
Plenty of people seem to have beaten Columbus, I'd recommend the book "Columbus Was Last" if you want to know more.
