The weirdest refereeing performance at a City game?

Can anyone think of games where the ref has favoured us?

The only one that springs to mind is the Fulham game in the third division when Michael Brown got away with a couple of reckless challenges early doors and only got a lecture, when most of us were fearing a straight red.

Oh and Ben Thatcher.

There will have been plenty, but we only really remember the ones where the big decisions went against us.

Wilkie Trafford fa cup game, his first United game since the Kung foo cantona sending off at palace,he was a total shithouse, a gift, but for me alf grey a more one sided performance like was said before, even to the extent that when Kev reeves headed into their net the whole ground was celebrating including the players, I had noticed that he had disallowed it I watched as grey was waving Liverpool forward to score, it was like he was shouting to them go on go on, luckily Tommy Caron n Nicky Reid had noticed it also, a arsehole of a referee, I could mention loads mostly against the scum and scousers?

Courtney and Grey against the red dippers in the 80s as already mentioned. In the FA Cup QF there was no way Courtney could be certain that Coton hadn't got a touch on the ball as both "pens" arose from fast attacks and Courtney wasn't close enough to tell - I'm not sure he was corrupt as such, he just guessed and favoured the "bigger" club (we were 2nd tier at the time).

Grey on the other hand was as bent as a £3 coin in that first leg of the League Cup SF. Kevin Reeves header was disallowed for some phantom pushing that no-one else could see - even the journos seemed baffled by it in the papers next morning - and then he topped it off by giving a free kick to them for nothing from which they scored.

Coton didn't play in the FA Cup quarter final (lost 4-0)as he joined us later. The dodgy decisions by Courtney were in the league game a few years later when we lost 3-0.....

Defo Mike Dean, for only just controlling himself in time from joining in with the Sergio pile-on

Cheers, my memory has obviously merged the two.

<rant>Any game involving us and scousers refereed by Walton. Plus Chris Foy at Norwich away, we won 6-1 and he was an absolute disgrace until we were 3-1 up and he seemed to shrug his shoulders and accept even he couldn’t cheat us out of a win.
Fat Phil giving a pen at Anfield when the ball was wellied at Micah from 2 yards away in the league cup, that cheating xxxxard Wiley disallowing Tiatto’s goal at ‘Boro away (off side apparently, although he’d run with the ball from the edge of his own penalty area to score) and the one that sticks in the memory like no other – a penalty against Fonzcheck (of Homer Simpson fame) in the cup at the swamp. It was such a weird decision, Kean (of dog pleasuring fame) thought the whistle had blown for a foul by him.
</rant>

good call that, the ref at norwich for the 6-1 was dreadful. clearly cheating until after about goal number three he quite clearly decided enough was enough and gave in. didnt know it was foy but i,ll take your word for it

Kirkpatrick. Forgot all about that wanker.

Been some good calls on the thread, to my shame Akf Grey had gone from my memory.

We played Liverpool at home in a League game in Malcs second period with us where we were bummed with 2 pens and lost 4-0, like in the cup can't remember the ref :s name.

Peter Walton is a referee from Northamptonshire who generally enjoys a poor reputation amongst supporters of top flight teams.

Walton is a place in Liverpool.

Easy to get confused I suppose.

This might be a wrong call, but didn't Alf Grey also give Arsenal a dubious late penalty in the 1977-78 League Cup Quarter final?
I'm pretty sure that it was mentione in the ref profile for the Liverpool game.

Foy vs united 2012 in the cup

A hand ball in there box and kompany being sent off for winning the ball

The courtney one is the one that will always stick in my memory. Liverpool were a class side as it was and he just gifted them 2 penalties. I remember the anger on the kippax and how loud we were that day. 'Your not fit to referee' and 'f'off courtney from Maine Road' songs.

I remeber Steve Bennett a couple of times at maine road, one time in particular a couple of fans actually ran on the pitch to confront him at one point. can't remeber who it was against though

Maybe his ancestors came from the Walton area of Liverpool and that is how they got their surname, hence his favouring of pool teams.

Possibly, unless they came from one of these:

Walton, Argyll and Bute
Walton, East Renfrewshire

Walton, Warwickshire [City/Town/Village]

And his perceived bias is a myth brought about by his general incompetence (and people mistakenly thinking he was from Liverpool)?

City 3-1 Wolves

Without doubt the most corrupt performance I've ever seen. The only decision he got right all game was the Kompany sending off.

Just check out the foul stats, they 're absolutely shocking. Keep in mind this was the champions elect vs the first team to get relegated.

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/15413453" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/15413453</a>

Fouls

City 17(!)
Wolves 5(!)

Crazy.

Agreed, Atwell was applying two sets of rules that day. I’m sure the fact that it came a week after we put 6 past the rags was purely coincidental. It was as if he’d been briefed that City commit lots of sneaky fouls so don’t give them any leeway but on the other hand Wolves are a good honest set of lads so give them the benefit of the doubt. The run of dismal refereeing performances we endured from then until about the April of that season was beyond belief. It just became the norm after a while. In fairness to Dowd he admitted he was wrong to award the penalty against Richards at Anfield, but it was a bit late by then.

Dean’s performance against Chelsea this season was weird and out of character. Definitely seemed that he’d been wound him up beforehand.

Was at both matches - it was from this point on that I realised City would have to be so much more successful to offset the bias of these perceived impartial referees when playing their favorites. Didn't realise it would take over 30 years though.

It was probably the start of the Agenda........
