First came across the word in the mide 80s in the old Blueprint fanzine. Prior to that i had never heard it used before. Still never/very rarely hear anyone from the Rochdale area use the word.
Maybe it is from a specific area of Manchester originally?
 
I believe the reference comes from some point in their history when they were without shirts for a game (dunno the reason) and had to wear some makeshift shirts which were shitty old things.

As someone else said, as long as it pisses them off, its all good with me.

Droylsden FC were called the rags in the 1970s for what it's worth.
