Draper, Utah (CNN) -- Convicted killer Ronnie Lee Gardner was executed early Friday by firing squad, the Utah Department of Corrections said.

Gardner, 49, is only the third person in 33 years to die by firing squad in the United States.

He was killed at 12:20 a.m. MST (2:20 a.m. ET), a Corrections Department spokesman said.

The execution came after Gardner's last-ditch efforts to save himself had failed..............

Family and friends of Michael Burdell were quoted as saying that the execution would simply be a victory for the violence that the lawyer sought to curb. Donna Nu, his fiance at the time, told the BBC World Service in April that we should have "gone past eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth".

Asked about Gardner's method of execution, she said he may have chosen it "partially to make the point how barbaric it is. Firing squad makes it more real what's happening than lethal injection does."

The family of his original victim wanted the execution to go ahead.

Mr Burdell's family had asked for Gardner's life to be spared but the Otterstrom family had argued against clemency. Mr Otterstrom's son, Jason, attended the execution.
