No we couldn't have, that has to be the most repeated myth ever.
First of all, he never would have come to us, he was being chased by Arsenal and Chelsea. Second of all Southampton were knocking back bids of £6m + from Chelsea and ended up selling him for a fee going up to £15m (from memory).
Why would have they accepted £1m from us a few months before?

Yes but if Pearce had bought him, he might not be the player he is now. Wenger has an incredible ability to take on young talent and turn them into superstars.
