Theresa Mays Last Day

The waters are a bit muddier than that....

As a matter of constitutional propriety, May will only be able to resign as prime minister if she can tell the Queen that her successor commands a majority. A Downing Street spokesman said May would resign when “she says to the Queen that she is stepping aside and believes that someone else can command the confidence of the house”. Her spokesman said a vote does not need to take place for May to believe that the new leader has the confidence of the Commons.

Labour sources said they believed the government whips had been planning recess to start potentially as early as 19 July – almost a week earlier than last year – in a move that could have delayed a confidence vote in the new prime minister. The announcement of the winner of the Tory leadership contest is not being announced until the week of 22 July.

Peter Bone, a Conservative backbencher, told the Commons on Thursday that the new prime minister should face parliament straight away. “Parliament matters. It seems to me entirely proper that the new prime minister should face this house before any recess.

“If the government falls on a vote of confidence on a newly elected Conservative prime minister, I would expect the Conservative prime minister to take us to the country and return with a substantial majority. We should not be afraid of parliament. We should encourage it.”

Not really. Unless the government falls then the Conservative Party Leader will be the Prime Minister. The rest of it doesn't alter that in any way whatsoever. You're over-complicating it by trying to read what you want into it. She is standing down as party leader today, she is still Prime Minister. When the winner of the leadership election is known, they will become Prime Minister unless there's a no confidence vote in the meantime. That's the practicality of it.

I think we agree, but I'm not sure ;-)

Mate, you started the thread titled "Theresa May's last day", not me. To coin a phrase "nothing has changed".

Which was my point it's her last day apparently butbit isn't.

As I saud on page one reply 3I think, my whole thread is as purposely pointless as her stepping down today, but still doing the same job anyway.

Also she is pushing policies today as she cannot in effect do so tomorrow even though she is still in the job, it's all a load of nonsense.

Um, well shall we say that wasn't clear? But fair enough.

A very good lady who has worked so hard. Thank you Theresa.

Bye theresa

As PM you suceeded in one thing

To become the worst in living memory.

Don't let the door smack you on the arse on the way out.

However looking at her possible replacements

As the specials once sang I dread to think what the future will bring
If Johnson gets the job, May’s record as being the worst PM in living memory will be be surpassed within weeks.

He’s still not getting passed the NI issue whatever the **** does.

er... yes...well right....err ( toussels hair ) come on chaps I mean ...err - we all want to make this stuff happen yeah? I mean carpe diem and all that lot what??

That will be the new Tory Brexit policy if he wins..........

A truly dreadful PM and person. Sinfully dull, small-minded and stubborn to the point of it being a mental defect. I also think, relatively speaking, she’s a bit thick.

The worst possible timing for the nation too.

I wish her no ill. I think she did her best. I hope she enjoys her retirement, notwithstanding my foregoing observations about her personality.

Absolutely fucking useless PM, though. I reckon most people in the street could have done a better job, or at least a less worse job than Mrs May.

Anyone off the street could have done as bad a job, but she seemed to pick her targets. Joe Blogs would have just messed up haphazardly but she knew what she was doing and deserves no sympathy

I think she will enjoy her retirement, she is a multi millionaire after all.
