The best thing to do whilst on crutches is wear slip ons, cos it's pretty hard work trying to tie shoe laces whilst on the crutches.

Was laid up for a few months at a similar age after a hip op. I had some coursework to keep me occupied with, but my advice would be for him to watch what he eats. I was eating pizza and shit while laid up, looked like Mr blobby by the time I got back into light walking, hard work getting the extra weight off.

Most shopping centres (like the Trafford centre) have mobility scooters that they loan hire / drop him off there he can do a bit of browsing / cinema / drinks / food etc

You can hire these things for outdoor use as well
