Sometimes I wish we were still shit!
Bear with me...
Believe me, these feelings of 'wishing we were still shit' are very few and far between. But, does anybody else wish there wasn't so much pressure on us?
I love the fact that we are competing for the Premier League, winning trophies in the past two seasons (and looking good for a third), showcasing some of the best players in the world, and generally being the centre of attention. But our expectations are so high now that it takes a little bit of the excitement away...
I have a vivid memory of beating Newcastle (I think it was 1-0 or 2-1, and I think Steve Howey scored) and that was the biggest result of the season, and was celebrated like we had won the league! Nowadays, if we dared to even draw with Newcastle the players would be booed off by some fans, slated in the media, the managers job security discussed in the press etc. and I find it a little tiresome.
I think what has brought this on is that when City play against teams my friends support (Villa, West Ham, Wigan, Bolton etc.) they always have the "Well, no one expected us to beat you" and it just reminds me of the days of no pressure, and the joy of a simple 3 points! I remember when winning a match, no matter who against, was celebrated with raucous cheers and celebration - compared to nowadays we just applaud what we have seen and casually saunter out of the stadium with a well-that-was-always-going-to-happen swagger!
Basically, we spent so long being the underdog and not expecting to win, that I am struggling to adjust to being the favourite! I'm loving it, and love seeing City winning (especially after all the shit we have had in the past), and am not going to start supporting Stockport County or anything - I just sort of miss the old days!
Anyone else? Or am I on my own?
