I know some people hate stats....so if you're one of those...stop reading now as I don't want to start a "stats are useless" discussion.

My take on this season is that our league form has been ok, but we have been poor in CL.

A lot has been made of us "misfiring" , "not clicking" i.e. not living up to last season's standards.

2011/12: First 10 games City had 81 shots on target...which produced 36 goals (an incredibly high 44% conversion rate)

2012/13: First 10 games City have had 107 shots on target (highest in PL) which have produced 18 goals (a below par 17% conversion rate)

Top teams normally have conversion rate around 23%-26% of shots on goal.(Comparison for other teams this season at end of this comment)

i.e. problem is not that we aren't playing well or creating chances...we are not being ruthless enough in front of goal.
e.g. compare Mario's volleyed goal vs blackburn away last year with his volleyed miss vs W Ham yesterday.

Also the comparison with last season's start is a false one as we had an unsustainable strike rate of virtually every other effort on target resulting in a goal.

Shots against us on target was 36 in first 10 games last season compared to 49 this season...which supports idea that we need to tighten up a bit in defence.
(Though 49 is second best in PL this season ....which suggests that defences generally are having a tougher time)

Stats for other teams this season:
Man Utd: 80 shots on tgt - 26 goals ....32% conversion rate
Chelsea: 81 shots on tgt - 22 goals.....27% conversion rate
Spurs: 91 shots on tgt - 17 goals....19% conversion rate
Everton:97 shots on tgt - 19 goals....20% conversion rate
Arsenal: 73 shots on tgt - 15 goals....21% conversion rate.

I keep a record from bbc sports website (mainly for betting purposes to be honest) and occasionally have to use Sky / guardian website to fill in gaps.

Opta stats are arguably more reliable but you have to pay a subscription fee for some info...and difference in methodologies / accuracy is negligible from freely available info on bbc etc.

For what its worth...the net figures of shots on tgt vs shots conceded is encouraging for Norwich + Aston Villa....but makes pretty grim reading for Sunderland (who are bottom of my league table on this measure).

In any single match (or even run of 2 to 3 matches) luck can obviously be more important than stats....but ultimately if you consistently allow the other team to have more attempts on goal than you are managing yourselves....you are making it very difficult to win football matches.

City are top of my net shots on goal per game league table:
(i.e. average shots on target - average shots conceded)

MCFC : + 5.8
Spurs : + 4.0
Everton: + 3.8
Arsenal: + 2.6
Chelsea: +1.6
Liverpool: + 1.6
Man Utd: + 1.3
... ....
bottom three are:
QPR: - 2.4
Reading: - 3.9
Sunderland: -4.1

My interpretation of above stats is that Everton + Spurs are playing pretty well generally + deserve to be at top end of table.
City should be higher...but clearly need to improve finishing as i said in OP.
Utd are relying on a very high strike rate to win football matches...as they are not creating as many chances as other top teams.
Sunderland have real problems in creating chances + will get sucked into a relegation battle if they don't improve.

Excellent thread ! Great to see some truths on here instead of media related shite !

Also apparrent is the fact that prem teams have learnt how to play against us thus far this season .... ie packed defences then hitting us on the counter. Also arguably our two most effective players Silva & Aguero have been injured and not yet at there best when fit which makes the stats even more impresive for me. The Silva , Aguero , Tevez and Nasri combination are key in City,s style of effective attacking play , it hasnt happened yet this season so less goals scored imho.

Cheers Scooby, good work.

That's telling me that the other teams are attempting to be more offensive, especially Chelsea and Everton who would have been described as 'cautious' in the past.

It's a myth that we are not creating chances, we clearly are.

We didn't play the same ten teams in our first ten games this season to what we did last season.

I'd like to see a direct comparison to the direct same teams we've played. But even then form, injuries, suspensions, officials, time of year, time of day...are all different.

Taking last season's corresponding fixtures we are 4 points better off, we have scored the same amount and conceded two less.

( obviously the newly promoted sides aren't included in this comparison )
