This self loathing attitude for some regarding England

england are my second team, after city i always want england to win. england is my country.

Same here.

I cannot understand how you can not support your country. It's just instinctive to do so.

My love for City dwarfs any feelings I have for England, but I still want them to win and get excited during the tournaments.

My brother in law is English through and through and supports Forest. Yet he supports Scotland because his Dad (my father in law) was born in Scotland. His Dad doesn't even talk Scottish, he moved here when he has about 8. My brother in law even hates England and laughs at their cockups.

How can anyone not support their own country?

This is the strange thing with me, it just doesn't come naturally, I have to force it. I'd consider myself to quite a rational sort of chap when it comes to most things in life but when it comes to supporting the England football team I become totally irrational.

The thing is, I really want to get enthusiastic about England in the World Cup because I feel like I'm missing out on something. I've tried to put it down to many things - the national anthem (I'm very anti-Royal but I don't think I can pin everything on that); hating United players (I can't say that I hate Rooney that much and I kind of like the fact that he gives his all for England and United fans don't like it); the dickhead England fans (I can't really pin it on that either as there are countless sound lads who follow England, Levets being just one of them); my Irish 'heritage' (I've never set foot in the bloody country)......SO WHAT THE FUCK IS IT?????

One thing's for certain, I'm going to tackle this head on. Watch this space.

There's a bit of the Man United in England, maybe that's it.

I don't mean in terms of the players, I mean in the way the fans scoff at Scotland and always expect to win. And aren't that bothered either way.

I know that's one of the things that the other home nations hate about England...arrogance.

Maybe, being a Blue, you are subconsciously repelled by that...

I must say it irritates me seeing real scrotes wearing England merchandise in the street. I don't know why, it just fucks me off.

I kept an eye on last night's game and was ever so slightly pleased when they won. But more so that Shaun had scored than anything else. It was like being a typical United fan for their games.

When it's the world cup I'll be as excited as for a City game, though.

I had the game on while fucking about at home and I was chuffed for Shaun and I was also glad Barry played well. To be honest, the more I think about it it's the actual players that fuck me off. If, through injury, loss of form and scandal, Terry, Lampard and Ferdinand were replaced by Lescott, Milner and Shawcross, and SWP and Crouch were also in the starting line up I reckon I'd really start to get more enthusiastic.

Why? Well it then becomes a side who aren't necessarily expected to do well, we are then the underdog and that sits much more comfortable with me. So in terms of the principle you were driving at Dave, you're probably right.

I've got a long way to go before I get as excited about an England match as I do for a City one though, a hell of a long way.

Hate to say this but Im a bit of a hyprocrite when it comes to the England team. I love the Euros and the World Cup but I really couldnt care less about anything inbetween.

My reasons are this are as follows:
1) The woeful attempts at an event that are international friendlies. They are NOTHING more than testimonial games, meaning nowt for the result, nowt for the fans and nowt for the players
2) Resulting out of the general lacklustre spectacle from 1) you get bad players attitudes crying off with fake injuries and wanting rests from internationals rubbish...Meaning third class internationals earning caps, cheapening the achievements of those more worthy
3) Qualifiers should end the tedium of the freindlies but oh no not any more. Of the say 12 qualification games in a campaign, 4 or 5 of them may be "proper games", thanks to the introduction of footballing non entities, Azarbaijan, Belarus, etc. Qualifiers should be all or nothing humdingers, England vs Holland, on a WEDNESDAY night, floodlights, flags, national anthems, the works.
Not Saturday afternoon against Albania away, and robbing us of a weekend of watching Cíty for such a useless waste of time.
4) The general loathsome creatures (except our heroes, SWP, Lescott, Hart, Bridge, Barry, Micah) who roam the england changing room, with their ipods, wags and bling just make me dislike the three lions even more during none world cup time.

So what are my suggestions to get the luuuurve back for Engerland...

1) Scrap all international friendlies, at least make money spinning tournaments over a season. Imagine...England, Germany, Holland and France playing each other home and away over the course of the season (thats 6 games people more than enough to add to the Qualifiers) The winners of the "tournament" get an extra place for their country in Champions League or Europa League for the next season...

2) Have a two tier qualification system for major tournaments. Understand the theory of Faroe Islands having a chance to qualify for the W/C as much as Italy BUT....wouldnt they benefit from playing in their own league. Lets say 1st year of qualification, your Lichentsteins, Luxembourgs, San Marinos, Kazachstans, Georgias, Vatican Citys and Scotland (:-) play off for 4-6 places in the second round of qualification with the big boys in year 2.
The result: these lower teams enjoy much more competitive matches than being hammered 6-0 every week AND the big boys can enjoy a trimmed down more of a test qualifying campaign in the second year. ALL qualification games become meaningful. Surely better for attitudes of players, quality of football, meaning higher gates, better atmospheres and a better TV spectacle!!!!!

3) If youre picked for England you play. Anyone crying off from an England international is automatically banned from playing within the next 10 days for the club unless he signs a decree of retirement which means he can never play for national team again. Harsh maybe, but only this way will we rid the international football teams of the Ryan Giggs of this world (I realise Bellamy may also come into this, but much as I love him Im sorry... tough)

4) make all England players proud to be selected. Make them wear suits, ban ipods from the busses, rip all the earrings out, make them shave before games, and get them to sing the national anthem. Maybe and only maybe then, we can start identifying with them as footballing idols. When youve won a World Cup, then you will be pictured of your tits on the front page of the sun with plastic boobs and the nation will love you (look at Freddy Flintoff) Currently youll be lambasted for bringing the name of the sport to a disgrace, for acting like popstars when youve actually won f-all on the national stage..Why...Players you are all disliked simples.

That said Ill still want England to win the world cup.. As I said Im a hypocrite!!!

Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

Always liked this quote by Samuel Johnson.

Patriotism to me means blindly thinking your nation is superior to others even though ones birth is purely accidental. This notion has caused incredible suffering since time immemorial.

If Americans want to be patriotic despite their countries appalling foreign policy then thats up to them.

A handful of incidents up and down the country.....

try following the team rather than reading the mail, then you'll see the real story. It was you who referred to England fans 'invading a foreign town and treating the locals like shit'... back in the 80's maybe....

I'd happily follow the team if these didn't

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5112364.stm

or these

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-11343103-england-fans-in-riot.do

Both those examples occured less then 4 years ago. Now i know the England fans in China behaved very well and i'd say that was mainly down to the fact that the fine, upstanding fans that usually follow the team couldn't afford to go, leaving a pale imitation of the 'barmy army' to ponce around drinking pimms and guffawing.

The problem i have is the fans always, always kick-off when the team is knocked out of a competition. Not very 'stiff upper lip' really is it?

Look mate... I know the problems associated with England abroad...
have you read the comments on the articles you posted? Enough said!
I'm really keen to know if you've EVER followed England at home or abroad... I have and thats why I can dismiss these articles as what they are...

I went to the Dam for that tournament too. Was there the weekend we played Germany and won. Plan was to get the train out (wasnt it in Belgium?) and try to gib in or tout a ticket.

We never even left Amsterdam in the end. Loads of others the same.

Was there the weekend we played Germany and won.
=======================================
Think we went back to brussells on the late train with about 500 mad fuckers on it... The police made us get off at the south station and walk through the turkish quarter... madness! Stayed in Grand Platz and then went to Amsterdam next morning... came back to charleroi for the Romania game.

Yeh, that train back to Brussels was mental pal.
There must have been 400 riot police at south station....walked us to the end of station concourse, then basiacally left 500 england fans to walk through the turkish quarter alone.......
All you could hear was 'stick together, stick together'........hundreds of Turks baying for english blood.......tempting england fans down side streets.....funny as fcuk when a few england fans charged at a few turks taunting them down a side street........then a few seconds later all of them running like fcuk back being chased by the loads more Turks armed with knives, machetes etc who had been hiding........scary but funny.

The whole night after that was surreal really........Turks clearly brandishing knives etc walking past the police taunting england fans with the police doing absolutely nothing...........but when england fans dared to retaliate (verbally) they waded in with batons, tear gas etc....

Much more 'peaceful and laid back' in the Dam the next few days eh Levets ??? ;-)
