Times are hard. There are nearly 48000 people at a televised game in crap weather supporting a team who have not won all season and people complain about maybe a thousand empty seats???
Presumably that's aimed at me, yes? I would suggest you read my post again. Here's a clue;

Yes; I know times are hard, and that fans are picking and choosing what games they go to. If that's the case however, wouldn't they go to this game and skip the likes of Swansea, Palace, Hull etc etc?

Not aimed at anyone - my point is that to get 47000, 46,000 or whatever is excellent. The weather is crap, the team is crap and it's a fantastic crowd. Sunderland is not a huge place and they are well supported. A lot of Sunderland fans will be in the pub getting pissed.

Fair enough. It's that whole ''hotbed'' nonsense that annoys me. I remember Newcastle getting miniscule crowds before KK went there as a player. Middlesbrough never seem to have a big crowd at the Riverside (even when they were in the PL) and Sunderland regularly have empty seats whenever I've seen them on the box. And all this pre-dates the current recession. It's not just ''hard times'' that is the cause of the empty seats.
