Thomas Cook

Malaysian airlines A380 coming into Manchester to cover reparations

A nice 13 hour flight from KL.

Clearly there were some very serious doubts surrounding the outcome of today’s talks.

Another one bites the dust. I’m not sure where the package holiday industry sits after this, they had a huge market share in the UK.

Stopped using said process many years ago and have travelled independently ever since, although I’m not sure I’d want to be an independent in a foreign country about now if I’d decided to use a TC aircraft.

Can only feel for all those who have lost jobs.

The Government effectively had the casting vote on whether Tommy Cook’s went out of business because RBS and Lloyd’s pulled the plug on a deal. It was clear any Government support was focussed on helping holiday makers get home since yesterday. They mustn’t have felt the business was recoverable or weren’t prepared to distort the market.

9,000 UK jobs of an estimated 22,000 worldwide. Feel for them all.
Knowing the current mob, not "distorting the market" is more important than the lost jobs.

Have my flight out to Grease next month with jet2 but my flight home is TC.

Not sure where we stand now. Not even sure if it's worth ringing the travel agent today as I'm sure they're being hammered with calls from people.

My son and his family were booked to go with TC to Majorca on Friday. He’s not that bothered as hopefully they are covered and can book another eventually but all those jobs gone.

Am I wrong, as usual, but I thought that travel firms were covered by ATOL(?) so that there is an insurance system to bring people home. So where has the need for £600m from the government come from?

The ATOL scheme only has £170 million in the bank and is still under pressure from the Monarch collapse. There isn't enough cash to bring everyone home so the Government will have to bail them out. Sooooo they could have 'underwritten' the £200 million to guarantee the company's future or fund the £600 million (of taxpayers cash) to bring the travellers home.

So they chose the latter ......... because ideology.

Conservatives eh. What are they like?

To be honest rightly or wrongly I’ve avoided booking holiday through them for years given the rumours that they were on the brink of collapse.

Only surprise here is that it didn’t happen sooner.

Sorry to hear about @CityWest s plight and anyone else who has been impacted
