Haven’t been to O.T. in years and have no interest in ever going again. I’ve witnessed their behaviour over the years and nothing ever surprises me with that mob.
Do they still do their ‘aeroplane-arms’ thing?
I haven’t been to Old Trafford for a match since the 1974 season when Denis Law backheeled the goal against the, already relegated, United to sink them in a great way.
Their fans were obnoxious back then. Some scrote nicked my scarf at Warwick Road Station. It was a very special to me as it a was college-style scarf combining all City’s colours: light blue, maroon and red black.
A pal of mine, Chris, found the supplier and took orders. It appeared to be from a girls college? I had worn the scarf at City matches around the country home and away through the late 1960s and into the early 1970s including winning every domestic trophy.
Just before the United match I discovered that Chris had died leaving a young wife and child. I couldn’t go to Old Trafford the following season, for obvious reasons! By the time United were back in the First Division, I had moved from Manchester. But I had already decided never to visit the Old Trafford again for football. Easy to say when I was living in Coventry, Leicester, and Edinburgh but I did mean it.
I did go to Old Trafford once since then. I was attending an academic conference at the University of Salford and the dinner for the conference was in the function suite there.
I had attended a City match (a 3-0 against Wigan with a Sergio hat trick), a couple of days beforevand bought a new black and red City top. Half way through the reception, I went to the toilet and returned wearing the top.
The conference organiser, a Warrington RL fan, thought it was hilarious. I spent the rest of the reception, in the suite, with clear views of the pitch. Some of the overseas delegates were bemused but most understood.
I suspect that if I ever go back to Old Trafford again it will be for cricket.
