Top notch player. Had a terrible season by his own lofty standards.
It's hard to say he wouldn't add huge amounts to the team in the immediate short term, but he would be 30 by the time he kicked a ball in anger and we would be spending £40m on him. He's not a technical player in the mould of a Scholes or Giggs, his game is based on energy and power as well as ability. How well will that hold up as he gets into his 30s? Would you want him if he lost the ability to burst past his man?
He would be 34 or 35 by the time his contract finished; can you honestly see him being world class at that age? Considering he'd cost £40m- ish and earn around £7m a year, the total outlay would be £70m+. It's a mind boggling sum of money for 1-2 years of quality and no resale value, only worth sanctioning if (a) you seriously think he'd push us into the title winning bracket and (b) he brought Torres with him.
Given the fact he's expensive and ageing and really not worth much to anyone who doesn't have a mega rich owner, he's arguably more valuable to us sitting on Liverpool's books as his value declines rapidly. Why help them out by giving them lots of money for an asset that is losing value rapidly?
It's tempting, but on balance I'd say no.
