Webb was reffing, and he was a bloody good ref. I'm pretty sure he didn't want to be the only ref in World Cup history to send a player off in a final.

EDIT - Also several players had already been sent off in World Cup Finals, including Zidane in the previous final. And Webb would go on to send off Heitinga later in the same game. He just completely fucked that decision

Yep, good point. I should have said, that early in a World Cup final. It was very early in the match. Zidane's was right at the end.
