Time off work with depression

Just wondering, and I hope this isn't taken the wrong way. But how do you know if you are suffering or have suffered from depression. I mean everyone has good and bad days don't they (granted some a lot worse than others). So I ask myself if i'm depressed how would i know? Does a GP have to rubber stamp it? Just wondering.

Well I can't speak fo anyone else but I didn't know I was depressed myself for a long time. My mrs talked me into going to the GP and he confirmed it.

Good man Ste, glad things are coming good.

Coming through the other side is great and you might look back and say "WTF".

The irony is, when I was at my lowest I never really worried about anything. Now I am getting better I worry about missing my kids if something goes wrong!

One bad day after another mate.

There always seems to be something waiting to drag you back down.
Job offer has gone MD has decided they now don't need to employ a New Business Underwriter at this time.
Felt physically sick when I read the email, been telling eveyone all week about how good my new job is going to be.

I've suffered serious depression most of my life, I'm amazed I'm still here cos the towel has been close to being thrown in many many times. It's not the greatest time to be a bloke what with all the changes in society, work, gender politics etc. And yet its still hard to talk about it which is why increasing amounts take the tragic step. It really is a living hell at its worst.

Early signs might be sleepless nights, loss of appetite, lack of interest in things you previously enjoyed, feeling tired all the time, mood swings.

If your doctor suspects you're suffering from stress, depression or anxiety he will refer you to a mental health professional who will conduct a PHQ9 and a GAD7 test before deciding on further action. There's also a lot of self help available on t'internet. 1st thing would be to isolate exactly what is getting you down (work, missus, bereavement etc) and take it from there.
