Tipping on ordering

Well, my point was more, if I go down the route of being a chef, i'm probably not expecting tips. If i'm a server, then excellent service sometimes results in a tip.

I'm not tipping when out for a meal because the food was excellent, that should be the case wherever you go (within reason, food quality etc), i'm tipping because the service provided from the serving staff was excellent.
Yes, it's not tips anymore really it's service charge and that is usually split between the whole team, bar staff, waiters , washer uppers, cleaners.A tip was a couple of quid to go in the waiters pocket. Service charge is a different thing.

I had several Americans in my taxi over the years and not one of them tipped which I thought was strange. Maybe they had tipping fatigue from the goings-on back home. Anyway no fucks were given.
I tipped the last taxi driver I used when I was there a few years back

Service charge allows employers to undervalue staff. My mates mrs works for virtually minimum wage in a public office - no one tips her. We need to fuck this American culture bollocks off once and for all and point blank refuse to pay a service charge. A tip for good service is a choice you should make not having some owner guilt trip you into. 20 percent so he can underpay his staff.

Depends where you go. Some places the full tip goes to the server.
It’s only the front of house that don’t get the full wage. There are certain restaurants around here where you have to know someone to ever get a serving job, they do so well in tips. Having said that you have to be fast on on your game, same with bartenders, if you’re good you can make really great money, even in my small local bar they’ll sometimes make a $1k in an evening shift

Never understood why people tip taxi drivers. Do you tip the bus driver?
Yeh it's crackers, tips for delivery drivers as well.
The tipping by card thing in pubs is a pain in the arse, the bar staff watch the till to see if you tip and are generally a bit shit if you don't tip, I'm not tipping you to be nice to me that's supposedly already included in the price of a pint with it being hospitality and all

I'm quite happy with a Service Charge on the bill at the end simply because you can, if you feel so, to ask for it to be removed - if I can I like to put 10% in cash in the hand of server instead but I do recognise that means it is possible that no every one involved in the delivery of my meal/drinks gets a tip. When added to the bill you have to take it on trust that the tip goes to the right people - with large organisations as a rule I think thats OK
Just ask them when paying the bill.

So restaurant staff should be under paid and undervalued as well because your mates Mrs is ?
Im all for restaurants paying a decent wage and not putting a service charge on, as long as everyone is happy to expect higher restaurant bills as part of it, so the staff get a decent wage.
Think many those arguing against service charges just want to pay less and don’t care what the staff get paid,
Don’t know anywhere that has a 20% service charge anyway 12 is about the norm 15 the highest I’ve seen
You can post on the internet all you like though about fucking it off, it’s here for good and the vast majority pay it without question.

Restaurants should pay a proper wage. No one should be reliant on tips to live, it’s that simple.

On the flip side. Restaurants need help at the moment too as generally, hospitality is taking a battering. Something with business rates or VAT could really help.

id heard that decent cocktail makers in the US can make a proper wad of cash!
These guys are mainly selling beer and shots, maybe a few margaritas, nothing fancy. They’re not making that every night but consistently do well

Tipping should be a thank you for good service/ food and not a granted extra.

I tip if the above criteria is met.

If not, it comes off.

American wages for servers are far less than here so tips are relied on. It seems that places here are getting lazy, including a service charge as a given.
