Can anyone explain how Betfair works?

You bet against other punters instead of the bookies. Betfair takes a % of whatever you win or lose. Smarkets and Betdaq works the same way.

It has advantages in the fact that you can make lay bets where you are the bookmaker. For example if you lay a bet that is 5/1. You are betting against that fighter, team, horse, dog to win. So if it comes back a winner you have to payout like a bookies. So for every £1 you are willing to accept you will have to pay out £5.
