Today's shooting in America thread

You keep mentioning Trump, blustering buffoon that he is, he's not solely responsible for this, the gun culture
has been there since the founding fathers.

Of course.

But Trump is in a position to change it and he chooses not to (because he is being supported by his friends in the NRA, big Pharma, etc).

That makes him guilty. And America guilty.

It also makes Obama guilty, Clinton guilty, Roosevelt guilty, in fact George Washington is also guilty.
There's a Trump thread to rant about Trump.

Obama and Clinton tried to change it.

I can not say what Roosevelt and Washington did. Only you are old enough to remember that.

Not quite, I've got another fortnight before I reach that stage.
Trying and doing are two different things, why did they fail? As I said, blaming Trump for a needed shift in the populace's stance
is ridiculous.

The argument by the pro gun people seems to be that more guns in the hands of the "good guys" would mean the lunatics would be deterred altogether , either that or they would be shot dead before they killed too many...
Personally i dont remember a single incidence in any of these mass shootings, where an armed member of the public has stopped the killings , the vast majority seem to have shot themselves , which sort of negates the argument that getting shot is much of a deterrent to them

There was an interesting thread on twitter about this yesterday. The school in this recent shooting had an armed guard. Sandy Hook had an armed guard.

In 2009 13 people were killed in an Fort Hood with tens of thousands of armed soldiers present.

Chris Kyle, the guy famous for the film American Sniper, knew the person he was with was dangerous, knew he was mentally unstable, told his friend. They were on alert. Both were armed as well as being special forces all-american superheroes, and both got killed before they could even draw their weapons.

Good guys with guns has never worked, it's not a strategy for reducing deaths, it's an ad campaign to promote gun sales.

How about blaming trump for preaching how this is a mental health issue, not a gun issue, less than a year after removing laws introduced by Obama to stop mentally unstable people getting their hands on guns? Is that ridiculous too?

I get the anti Trump feeling, but Trump is the elected president, voted in by people who know all the
faults you outline, you have to convince people to give up guns, which they show no signs of wanting to.
So continually referencing Trump as the architect of this nightmare is not productive, any opposition would have
to make a change in policy one of its priorities, Obama tried, and failed, the problem is the people themselves.

The concept of the good guy with a gun shooting the bad guy with a gun .... just sounds like someone trying to sell two guns.

Trump pledge to abolish gun free zones , and repeal legislation which blocked the mentally ill from owning guns.

Obama wanted to pass laws after Sandy Hook but was unsuccessful because of a Republican majority in the House. He also proposed rules that would require Arms dealers (who sold more than 50 guns per year) to be licensed (sounds logical)

Clinton passed legislation banning a lot of assault style weapons following Columbine.... unfortunately some of these have been reversed

Yes, I know this, and I agree with all your sentiments here, the only answer though is to elect a president, and congress,
that vows to radically tackle this problem and makes it a priority in their manifesto, I would
be happy, as I'm sure you would. My feeling is, however, that this won't
happen because of the entrenched attitude of the populace.

Exactly.

We have come full circle. You can only conclude that Americans are shit for brains.

Meanwhile we wait for the next school to be shot up. Should be soon.
