I'm at much of a loss as to how you spread the loot about. If you spend it according to the last haul of medals and it goes belly up at the present - rowing - then you are looking likea bunch of no-nowts and wastrels. If you try to anticipate the period coming up to a games or championship and succeed you might be better employed selling sealed envelops of upcoming lottery numbers. Sports administrators or in a win-lose-lose situation. If the athletes bring home the bacon you look good, if they screw up you look like philanthropist with money to burn. When you look into how the sports are funded you get some interesting results.
If you treat a Gold as 3 points, Silver as 2 points and Bronze as 1 point then divide the total for each sport you get the following cost for each sport per points earned.
UK Sport needs to take a long hard look at how they fund our Olympic sports and a redistribution is long overdue.
- Weightlifting and Skateboarding have cost us nothing at all.
- Swimming has the best return with each point costing £985,876.
- Athletics at £11,503,766, Rowing at £8,218,469, Judo at £6,564,334, Shooting at £6,008,790 and Canoeing at £5,448,231 are the worse.
- The rest range from a high of £2,681,738 (Gymnastics) to a low of £1,007,053 (Triathlon).
P.S. - These figures will change especially if our Athletes pull their collective fingers out.
I agree but with rowing the writing was on the wall when the long time coach Jurgen Grobler resigned.I'm at much of a loss as to how you spread the loot about. I think with the Athletics they can justify the viewing figures and increased participation, where medal return isn't the most important, I think it's the most watched sport by quite a bit. Plus unfortunate injuries have cost us medal opportunities, at least 2 imo. When you look into how the sports are funded you get some interesting results.

Why do the BBC cover Irish sporting achievements as if they're still part of the UK rather than a different country? I can't imagine them talking about a French semi-final match in the same way they just did with the Irish boxer getting to the final.
