Tokyo 2020 Olympics/Paralympics

When you look into how the sports are funded you get some interesting results.

If you treat a Gold as 3 points, Silver as 2 points and Bronze as 1 point then divide the total for each sport you get the following cost for each sport per points earned.
  • Weightlifting and Skateboarding have cost us nothing at all.
  • Swimming has the best return with each point costing £985,876.
  • Athletics at £11,503,766, Rowing at £8,218,469, Judo at £6,564,334, Shooting at £6,008,790 and Canoeing at £5,448,231 are the worse.
  • The rest range from a high of £2,681,738 (Gymnastics) to a low of £1,007,053 (Triathlon).
UK Sport needs to take a long hard look at how they fund our Olympic sports and a redistribution is long overdue.

P.S. - These figures will change especially if our Athletes pull their collective fingers out.

I'm at much of a loss as to how you spread the loot about. If you spend it according to the last haul of medals and it goes belly up at the present - rowing - then you are looking likea bunch of no-nowts and wastrels. If you try to anticipate the period coming up to a games or championship and succeed you might be better employed selling sealed envelops of upcoming lottery numbers. Sports administrators or in a win-lose-lose situation. If the athletes bring home the bacon you look good, if they screw up you look like philanthropist with money to burn.

The Elimination race of the Omnium is my favourite event of the Olympics. Just brilliant that you get a photo finish every 30 seconds for ten minutes.

I agree but with rowing the writing was on the wall when the long time coach Jurgen Grobler resigned.

Certainly judging on one Games is crazy - after Rio, I think UK Sport chucked basketball under a bus.

I think there has to be some assessment of opponent strengths - rowing for example seems to have opened up at around the time the rowing coaching team in the UK broke up. Possibly, the UK was over-achieving beforehand, and has settled back to where it ought to be. Were Australia, etc, underperforming and have now funded themselves properly and caught up?

There's also a difference between the competitive races and the 'marked' events like gymnastics; the latter is sometimes dependent on whether the opposition fall off, and that has nothing to do with the UK spending.

They would also have an understanding of what the money gets spent on. Rowing needs to keep large rowing lakes cleaned - I have no idea what that would cost per lake per year.

I think with the Athletics they can justify the viewing figures and increased participation, where medal return isn't the most important, I think it's the most watched sport by quite a bit. Plus unfortunate injuries have cost us medal opportunities, at least 2 imo.

Why do the BBC cover Irish sporting achievements as if they're still part of the UK rather than a different country? I can't imagine them talking about a French semi-final match in the same way they just did with the Irish boxer getting to the final.

I don't know why they just don't get rid of the flags and just have a "Lots of people chucking and running for medals" free for all.

That way people can see the athletes and not the flag that means next to nowt, let's be honest you don't even have to have any affiliation with the country you hop skip jump or trot a pony for now.
