Top 3 Rolling Stones Songs

Gimme - the original had Merry, but Mick Taylor made the track soar too.
Sympathy - obviously
Undercover of the Night - their last classic imho

I think their top 15 or so songs would be hard to beat by anybody. I certainly wouldn't call anyone daft if they said they were the 2nd best band of all time.

They have been around long enough to build up that catalogue mind.
I think if you lined up their top 15 tracks, maybe only The Who could rival them for 2nd place.

Gimme Shelter
Under my Thumb
Jumpin Jack Flash

Sympathy for the Devil and Paint it Black narrowly miss out.

Great band.

Gimme Shelter,
Sympathy for the Devil
Brown Sugar

So many to choose from. What a band.

Special mention to Far Away Eyes from the Some Girls album. Great country choon.

My opinion: Steely Dan could, maybe even more so than the Who (and I love them both).

Led Zep maybe could too but you'd HAVE to include a cover ("When The Levee Breaks"), so if you're one who thinks "It's All Over Now" is Stones top 15 (since it's a cover), you have a comp.

How about The Beach Boys? Maybe -- they're probably close (but I'm a Californian). Or The Kinks? I don't think so personally. AC/DC perhaps? Not enough variety vs. the Stones.

If you really wanted to stretch the limit a lot, maybe REM could, and maybe U2, but I wouldn't. The Clash perhaps? Not enough longevity to create 15 tunes as good as the Stones 15, but had they stuck around, maybe they could have. And now we're outside the genre, but great music is great music.

In the end . . . . you're probably right!

Gimme Shelter - absolutely perfect. You can't add anything, take anything away to make the song better. Not many bands can make songs this good to open up an album. Rock at it's absolute finest for me.
If I had to pick one song that I thought truly represented the essence of the Rolling Stones, this is the one I would pick -- over Satisfaction, or Brown Sugar, or Paint It Black, or Miss You or any of the others (even though I love Can't You Hear Me Knocking maybe most of all).

It's an absolute fucking sledgehammer. There aren't that many songs that definitionally can only be played at full volume. This is one of them.
