top 6 next season

Top 6? Things are improving at HOME but away from home were still awful and have been all season and theres nothing to suggest to me that thats going to improve in the near future although lets give Hughes the benifit of the doubt and let him spend 100 million in the summer and we'll be sorted.........

Lets secure football in the premiership first and by beating Sunderland on Sunday we will take an important step in that direction before we look at next season.

The trouble with the club at present and it includes many a fan as well as some of the players is they get too far ahead of themselves.

Sunday may be a chance to put some more space between us and bottom three , its a tough game coming off another Europe trip and made worse by Sunderland sliiping up at home on the weekend.

We have nine games to negotiate first before another summer of good recruitment before we can start to comcern ourselves with next season.

defo in the bag for next season

things are starting to grow with the team
to go to chelsea without a midfield and a striker and not roll over

ok we lost but we give them a game and with there best team out aswell
we did not look out of place and stud up to them and they will from now on respect manchester city

with the players we have already just think what the summer could bring

a very good striker 20 goals a season that what missing this season

two more midfield players
two more defenders

and a fit petrov down the leftwing

come on do you not smile when you think what next season could be for us
I agree, it is a nice thought but when players are obviously not trying it is hard to stomach. Dont want us to become a gravy train with so called superstars not givin a fuck for the club and the rest of the premiership laughing at us.
Dont care for big names, just players who will sweat blood for the club.
Lets be honest Chelsea are where we want to be and yesterday they didnt get out of 2nd gear.
We need a bench that would fit into most premiership sides and we aint got anything near that.
Dont want to think about next season yet, just want to go out with a bang on this one and if that means we lose a few but show guile and spirit and heart then i would be happy and then think about the season coming with great anticipation. We did'nt show that yesterday
Dont want to be negative, but we have too many average players

Top six next year?

Two years after finishing 9th. Ayear after spending almost £150m on players.

And with no doubt another massive amount spent on players in the summer.

Top six is the minimum place that we should expect after that.

It's nothing to wet your pants over.

Just goes to show how the current management team, through banging on about it every week after another dispointing result, have managed to skew the expectations at this club.

At the start of the season, without the money, many were saying that if we progressed under Hughes we might have an outside chance of top six.

Now, history has been rewritten. He appparently took over one of the worst teams in the league (yet he chose to leave Blackburn for this shocking team), has only spent enough to sort out the mess that he inherited so can't be expected to match the results of, say, West or Wigan with these players and cannot be expected to produce decent performances and an up turn in fortunes within his first year of being here (despite the likes of Alladyce, Hiddink, Megson, Bruce etc all doing it virtually immediately with virtually no spending at their clubs).

So, yeah, £200m onwards, on top of a half decent squad and we might be able to aim at sixth?

Wow, I suppose without the most money ever spent by a manager in his first season IN THE HISTORY OF FOOTBALL we'd have had to have settled for 19th place being a good season and 6th in the Championship next year being our aim.

Very good post JMA.

And if people cant understand why the anti-Hughes brigade have a very valid opinion, then they need look no further than your post.

Hughes is trying building for the future, trying to get rid of the problems with the previous regimes and produce a sustainable method of growth for our club.

The managers you have mentioned were brought in for short term fixes and it's unfair to compare what Hughes is trying, to what those other managers are after. Other managers (eg Harry Twatknapp) would have signed more experienced premiership players in summer to compliment what we already had, which would have need less bedding in time but Hughes is trying to build for the future. His aim seems to be wholesale changes now and then small changes in the future, whether you think he is doing well at this is another matter all together.

Oh and our league position flattered us last year, the same side under any manager would have finished much lower this season.

It was always about next season and not this one for me when the money arrived. I expect us to compete next season. Maybe not win trophies but be in the mix and in with a shout.
