Ineos dictate days like this. They dictate whole tours. Jumbo Visma look like they will do that from now on.
Disappointing to see Carapaz fade today, considering he was brought in to bolster Bernal and be an alternate option having come off a Giro win last year.
Just reinforces the impression we’re looking at a 3 week Jumbo Visma procession.
Ineos performed reasonably, all things considered.
Sivakov - recovering from injury and trying to ride it off
Amador - same as above
Rowe - there for the flat
Carapaz - disappointing as @chesterbells said. To be fair to him, he was building up to the Giro rather than the Giro
Van Baarle - nonestly not sure what happened to him but he would unlikely to have been there in the last 2km. In fact, no need for him on the final climb as he is slightly below Castro and Kwiato
Castro - he was there until Van Aert peeled off with about 2km to go. Not far off what can be expected. He's not a climber. He's an engine
Kwiato - same as above, pretty much
Would suggest main difference between LJV and Ineos was Kuss. People have to remember Ineos are in a stage of transition. They are basically missing the best GC rider of this generation and a very good all-rounder and GC winner (Thomas). LJV flit in and out, rather than dominate. They pick their moment. It is hardly as dominant as the SKY train of 2011 onwards. They don't have the strength.
Bernal had the legs today. He just didn't have the sprint, as expected. In a climb like that, Roglic will always out sprint him at the end. The Colombian finished on the same time (official) but 3s difference on the clock. On an alpine climb at altitude, I would suggest Roglic would not be able to do that. These kind of climbs favour Roglic. If Bernal outsprinted him today, it would have been a major surprise.
Fuller analysis that, cheers. I didn’t see how things panned out for each rider, so a useful read. I certainly hope you’re right, and things are not as clear cut as I feared.
Adam Yates now holds the yellow jersey
