Manchester City set to make £12 million bid for Kolo Toure

Toure will be allowed to leave Arsenal by manager Arsene Wenger

Manchester City will make a £12 million bid for Kolo Touré, the Arsenal centre back, now that the North London club have concluded the signing of Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax.

City tried to sign Touré in January, but while Arsène Wenger was loath to lose the defender in mid-season, the manager has accepted that Touré wants to leave and would rather sell now than lose him for nothing when his contract expires next summer.

With the African Cup of Nations taking place in Angola in January, Wenger is also aware that he would probably lose the Ivory Coast defender for about a month anyway.

Mark Hughes, the City manager, wants to pair Touré with Joleon Lescott, 26, of Everton and England, to form a more balanced, new-look central defence next season.

Hughes wants a left-footed central defender who can also operate at left back if necessary, but with Everton opposed to selling Lescott and likely to demand at least £20 million, Hughes may turn to Matthew Upson, of West Ham United.

£12m a bit steep for someone who wants to leave with 1 year left on contract and away in Jan IMO

I hope we don't buy too many African players, losing them for a month every two years would be a pain in the arse.

Toure and Lescott would be ideal. Both are very good central defenders, comfortable on the ball and also able to play (or cover) at full back.

More interestingly it looks likely Mascherano is moving to Barcelona-a world class defensive midfielder, same position as Yaya Toure,is he on the move as some have linked us with him on here.

not a bad player but 12m.

He's only 28

I agree although to be honest if the last bit about upson is true I think defensively he is better than lescott and would prefer him, but lescott is a better option for set pieces

He's a quality player. Id rather pay about 10m for him...but 12 is ok. I dont like losing him on international duty every other January, but the key for City will be who else Hughes brings in for depth.

The Future is Bright....The Future is BLUE

A far better all round buy than RSC who could quite feasibly be out for a hell of a lot longer than 1 month every two years.
12m for a giant of a CB is good business in todays 'City' money.

Full name Kolo Habib Touré

Place of birth Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire

Definitely would improve the squad in ability and experience.
